Today we have made our own healthy fruit salad like Oliver did in our book of the week. Firstly we spent time looking at the different fruits, talking about their beginning sounds and describing what they looked, smelt and felt like. Then all the children had a turn at chopping the different fruits. They learnt about how knifes are dangerous and how to use a knife safely to chop the fruit. Lots of the children found it was harder than they thought to cut through it and it was a great activity for developing their motor skills.
Once all the fruit was chopped and mixed together in a bowl, we shared it out and the children ate it for snack. Some of the children found that they liked some fruits that they thought they didn't. The fruits we included in our fruit salad were apples. bananas, pears, pineapple, plums and strawberries. See if your child can tell you what they thought about the fruit salad.

The children have enjoyed spotting the letter sounds we have been learning around nursery. We have found letters everywhere and the children have enjoyed pointing them out and saying the sounds.
Perhaps you and your child could spot letters when you are out and about or maybe around your house. This week we are learning about how fruit grows with the book "Oliver's Fruit Salad." We will be talking about where different fruits come from and the children will have the opportunity to talk about their favourite fruits. We will also be discussing healthy eating and sorting fruit and vegetables.
In the outdoor area, we have a fruit and vegetable shop role play area. The children will learn how to take on the different roles of shop keeper and customer. There will be lots of opportunities for sharing and turn taking with the till and we will learn about money too. In the mark making and creative areas, we will be creating our own bowls of fruit with different materials. Here are some photos of us engaged in our learning so far this week: Today was NSPCC Numbers Day and the children at Park Street were invited to wear clothing with numbers on. We had a great mixture of football shirts and other numbered tops as well as some amazing home made number outfits! Throughout the session, we engaged in lots of different number based activities including:
- singing lots of number songs while showing amounts on our fingers. - building number blocks towers to show how many boys and girls in nursery and then comparing them. - hunting for hidden coins around nursery and then sorting them into 1p and 2 p coins. We then counted how many of each and built coin towers, - going on a number hunt around school and outside- we found numbers everywhere! - playing different number games in the nature reserve. The children had a really fun day and learnt lots about numbers! Our new learning focus for this week is growing flowers and we are focusing on the book "The TIny Seed" by Eric Carle. We have read the book and talked about how flowers grow from a seed. We have also been talking about what plants need to grow and the children were able to talk about sunlight and water.
In our provision this week, we have been artists! We have been creating paintings and drawings of flowers by looking very carefully and trying to draw what we can see, thinking about the colours and the shapes. The children have done a great job of painting tulips and drawing spray carnations. We have also used flower petals to create our own collage pictures which was a very popular activity. Here are some photos of us engaged in our learning this week so far: For our baking activity today, we made chocolate rice crispy buns. Our learning focus was around melting and noticing changes. We looked carefully at the chocolate and the children noticed that it was hard. We talked about what we needed to do to the chocolate to make our buns and some children knew we needed to melt it and suggested using the microwave. Once the chocolate was melted, the children described it using these words: runny, dripping, sticky and wet. Finally the chocolate was mixed with the rice crispies and the mixture was carefully spooned into bun cases. At home time the children noticed that the chocolate had changed again- what a lot of Scientific thinking!
We have had an exciting delivery of caterpillars arrive at nursery. When they arrived, they were so tiny! We are enjoying observing them carefully to see how they grow and change. We have noticed that they are getting much bigger already!
We are learning about the life cycle and we hope we will have some butterflies soon. Please look out for up-dates. For our baking activity this week, we made raspberry and white chocolate muffins. There was lots of learning opportunities for the children! Firstly, they had to carefully weigh and mix all the ingredients. This involved melting the butter, pouring in the milk, cracking the eggs and stirring in the other ingredients. The children talked about the changes they noticed to the ingredients as they worked. Finally the mixture was added to the bun cases before being cooked in the oven. I hope they tasted as good as they looked and smelt!
Over the course of this week, we have been looking carefully and observing the changes with our bean seeds. We were amazed when some green shoots started to peep through the soil and we also noticed that some had a root coming out of the bottom of the pot. Later in the week, we noticed that they were getting taller and leaves were starting to grow! We are wondering what changes we will notice next week.
Today we have planted a different kind of seeds to see how they grow- cress seeds! Firstly, we drew a face on a plastic cup. Then we filled the cup with cotton wool and wet it so it was damp. Finally we sprinkled cress seeds on the top. We are hoping our cress will grow up and make hair for our face!
We are going to send the cress home so you can look after it and watch it grow at home. Please send in some photos so we can share with everyone at nursery. Remember- you can eat the cress when it has grown! See if you like it |
