Our new book of the week is "The Enormous Turnip." We have read the book and talked about how big the turnip was using words such as big, huge, ginormous, gigantic and massive. Not many children knew what a turnip was so we talked about vegetables and named lots of different ones. In the painting area, we have been printing with vegetables and some of us have tried to make our prints into a recognisable picture. In our provision we have had a large turnip and the children have been using it to act out the story with their friends.

Today on our welly walk in the nature reserve, we explored our mud kitchen. The children were very imaginative as they selected different natural ingredients from around the nature reserve to include in their recipes. We had pizzas, pancakes, cups of tea and coffee, soup and even pasta with a cheesy sauce and garlic bread! There was lots of sharing and turn taking happening too as well as lots of communication as the children chatted to each other about their cooking.
Today we have decorated biscuits to create butterflies. We recalled our learning about the wings being symmetrical from last week and then we had a challenge to try and make our butterflies symmetrical. We did a great job!
Here we are engaged in our provision while learning about the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. This week our activities include: exploring a tray of soil with gardening tools and different sized plant pots. re-telling the story of Jack and the Beanstalk using our castle, fabric beanstalk and puppets and creating a leaf for our class beanstalk using collage materials. We have also enjoyed digging the garden outside.
This week we are continuing our growing theme with a focus on "Jack and the Beanstalk." Today we read the story together and then planted our own bean seeds. We talked about how to plant them and what they will need to grow. We have put them in a light position in nursery and can't wait to look after them and see how tall they get.
Today on our welly walk in the nature reserve we have been on a minibeast hunt. We searched for different creatures and found that they like to live in damp, dark places. The children used their observational skills to talk about what they could see and how they were moving. We also discussed looking after the creatures as they are living things.
Here are the nursery winners of our Extreme Reading Competition. They were very proud of themselves and excited to win a new book!
As part of our minibeast learning, we have been finding out about the wings on a butterfly. We have learnt that they are symmetrical. which means they are the same on both sides. Today we created our own symmetrical butterfly prints by painting patterns onto butterfly wings and folding. We were amazed to open it up and find our very own symmetrical butterfly!
Our new theme for learning this half term is "Watch it Grow" and within this we will be finding out about how things grow in the garden. This week we are focusing on minibeasts.
Some of our provision activities have included: building homes for the toy minibeasts and acting out different scenarios with them. exploring spaghetti worms with our hands and tweezers, creating symmetrical butterflies, completing life cycle jigsaws and reading books about minibeasts. Welcome back to the Summer term in nursery!
Today we have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all our friends again after the Easter break. In the outdoor area we have been focusing on our physical skills- climbing on the climbing wall and clamberstack, riding the bikes and scooters and building with the large bricks, tyres and crates. There have been lots of opportunities to develop our confidence and skills, particularly on the clamberstack! Here are some photos of us in action: |
