In Team DB, our science enquiry for this half term has been to investigate the effects of certain food types on our teeth. Our science topic for the term is looking at Animals including humans, and in Team DB, we have been looking at human teeth. The children predicted what they thought would happen to the enamel when it was left for a certain length of time in different substances. We used egg shell for our investgation, as egg shell is made from enamel. We chose vinegar, as this is an acid, orange juice, milk, water and cola. We left the egg shell in the liquids for several days and then recorded our results and our findings. The children were amazed at what could happen to the enamel on their teeth if they were never to brush their teeth!

In Team DB today, we welcomed parents and carers into our classroom to take part in a writing workshop with the children. The theme was a winter's day, and the objective was to write a setting description based on their visit to the nature reserve and a given picture of a winter scene. We discussed as a whole class the features that were used when writing a setting description, and we set off to the nature reserve to use our senses to help us with out writing. When we returned, our parents and carers helped alongside us to write a descriptive setting for a wintery scene. The children (with the help of our adults), produced beautiful pieces of writing. Thank you to all who came along to work with Team DB, the children thoroughly enjoyed your company for the morning!
Our science enquiry for this half term was Problem Solving, and Team DB looked at the effect of chain reaction. The children had to design their very own Rube Goldberg machine! They researched other Rube Goldberg designs and discovered that there were many different components that set off a chain reaction, causing movement from point A right through to the end, point B. The children were allowed to use cardboard, cotton reels, tubes, books, lego, wooden train pieces, marbles, cars, you name it, they could use it! The only problem was, they were only allowed to set off their chain reaction at point A, and they had to have at least four different parts to their chain reaction, allowing it to run through to the end unaided. Once again, Team DB had to work in teams and many groups had to look at their designs, evaluating them to see if they could improve their designs so as the chain reaction would work effectively. The children had great fun, and were ecstatic when their chain reactions worked! Literacy
Over the last couple of weeks in Team DB, the children have been working very hard with their newspaper recount using the hook text, Dracula. The children have become very fascinated about this character, learning about the author and the idea of vampires. In order to write their newspaper recounts, the children have been learning about past tense, writing in third person, the difference between fact and opinion and how to use speech marks effectively. The children are looking forward to presenting their learning. Maths In Team DB, we have been continuing our learning surrounding multiplication. The children are developing their knowledge and understanding of various timestables and how to multiply using 2-digit by 1-digit, and 3-digit by 1-digit. They are having to use their knowledge of place value to when using column method for multiplication. P.E. In P.E., Team DB have been practising their Tag Rugby skills outside on the courts with Mr Smith. They have been learning the rules of the game, ensuring that they are working as a team. The children have been using their evading and skills and tagging opponents, passing and receiving a pass at speed and refining and defending their skills. The children will have the opportunity to use these in a game against their peers. We have had a busy first week back at school. The children all seem to have had a good rest over the holidays, and it was wonderful to see them on Tuesday. This week in Literacy, the children have began reading their new text, Dracula, and researching about the mythological figure. They have enjoyed looking into more detail about where Bram Stoker first bore the idea for this character, as well looking in more detail at the history behind the story.
Maths In Maths, Team DB have started looking attentively at multiplication, focussing on their timestables. The children have been working hard in developing their knowledge and understanding around this subject, and how using column method can help when calculating multiplication problems. They all remembered how multiplication is commutative, just like addition, as well as identifying how multiplication is repeated addition. History For our topic this half term, the children will be focussing upon the Ancient Greeks. This week in Team DB, we have started investigating what we already know about the Ancient Greeks, and how there are some links between this era with other historical topics. The children were aware about the conceptual links between History and other areas of the curriculum, such as Geography and Science, as well as linking the Ancient Greeks to the Romans! The children are very excited to begin their new topic. |
Welcome to Team DBIn Team DB, we always love to share our amazing learning journey with others; where we post our work and photos for all to see. Take a look each week, to find out all about the wonderful learning we have been doing. Archives
