Literacy
The children in Team DB have been working very creatively this week in all areas of their learning. In writing, the children have been learning about Cinquain poetry and the pattern to follow when writing them. The class have been able to implement some aspects of their learning from the half term into their poems, adjectives, expanded noun phrases, verbs and adverbs of manner (feelings). The children enjoyed writing their poems about Halloween and all things spooky 👻🧙♀️. Maths: This week in our maths learning, the Year 4 children have been continuing with developing their understanding of addition and subtraction using the column method. The children have been investigating how to use the inverse operation to find missing numbers when trying to solve a calculation. This could be in an addend or in the sum, or the minuend, subtrahend or difference. The children are beginning to use their fabulous addition and subtraction skills to solve multi-step word problems and reasoning.

R.E. This half term, Team DB have been looking in detail at the celebration of Diwali. As our religious focus for this year is Sikhism and Chrisitianity, Team DB have looked at the various ways Diwali is celebrated in other religions. The children have discovered how Diwali is celebrated across the world, across different faiths including Hindus and Sikhs, but how ultimately it is expressing the belief that good will overcome evil. The children have spent time sketching and designing their own diya lamp, to the recreate this using clay as a media. The children enjoyed this during their Incredible Us! time, later painting their Diya lamp using bright colours. Here is a collage of our creativity in R.E. below to celebrate Diwali. The children have looked in detail at the simialrities and differences of how Diwali is celebrated in both Hinduism and Sikhism. They have also retold the story of Rama and Sita.
Writing
This week the children have been very busy beginning their learning about transcriptional skills that we use in writing. As a hook to our writing, the children have been looking at the descriptional langauge used to describe different creatures found in Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them. The children have been discovering how JK Rowling uses powerful adjectives to describe the various animals, and how they can apply these into their own writing. Our ultimate purpose to use descriptional writing to create our very own Boggart, including writing our own Riddikulus spell (a charm that is used in defense of a Boggart) to overcome our fear! Maths Wow!! Team DB have been showing their amazing maths skills over the last few weeks. Year 4 children have contiuned to develop their column addition and subtraction skills, showing that they can exchange between the different place value columns. The children are now extending this knowledge to four and five-digit numbers. In Year 5, the children have grown in confidence when using decimal fractions, and are now using this knowledge to add decimal fractions up to 2 decimal places. The children have been using manipulatives to help them understand about these mathematical concepts. Science This week, Team DB have started their experiments about the States of Matter. The children have been investigating if temperature affects the rate at which ice melts. The children used the Dataloggers to record the temperature in the three different areas around school. The class predicted what they thought would happen, and how the fridge would be where the ice would melt the slowest.T hey observed the changes throughout the day, recording the level of water in each measuring cylinder. They concluded that their predictions were correct! This term we are exploring ‘Where would you like to visit in Europe?’ and the children will be working in groups to create sculptures of iconic buildings found at famous landmarks across Europe. In preparation for this we have been exploring famous landmarks and sketching them in artbooks, focussing on the architecture of the various buildings. We have been using different media to sketch our drawings, mainly using pencil, to identify the patterns used in the architecture of the buildings. We have worked using photographs of the landmarks and have begun to discuss plans for our final 3d model in our groups.
Our artist of the half term is Renzo Piano and we are going to be investigating the techniques that he used to create iconic landmarks throughout Europe, implementing some of his methods and ideas into our own sculptures. |
Welcome to Team DBIn Team DB, we always love to share our amazing learning journey with others; where we post our work and photos for all to see. Take a look each week, to find out all about the wonderful learning we have been doing. Archives
