Continuing with our Christmas theme for our Incredible Us! session, the children in Team DB have been making their very own snowmen. They had to consider carefully, where to place their arms and legs, and how they were going to attach the marshmallows together. The children were given three marshmallows, melted chocoloate, chocolate matchsticks and smarties. They were very creative, and even though the chocolate matchsticks were melting, the children had a fabulous time making them, especially when they got to eat them! Yum, yum!

Literacy
Over the last few weeks, the children in Team DB have been very busy in their writing sessions. Every day the children are working very hard in hteir handwriting sessions as everyone is trying to aiming to achieve their pen licence! In our writing, the children are preparing to write their own setting description and have been learning about what makes an effective setting description to engage the reader. We have been learning about metaphors and similes and how we can use these in our writing to create comparisons between two things. Maths In our maths learning, Team DB have been continuing developing their addition and subtraction skills, moving onto numbers larger than 10,000! They have had to develop their understanding about which digit belongs in which place value column and ensure that they present their own mathematical skills correctly, so as not to make any errors when calculating their problems. The children have also been using these skills in reasoning problems, recognising the operation required to solve the problem. R.E. - Sikhism In R.E., Team DB are continuing developing their knowledge and understanding about the religion Sikhism. We have been looking at Special Places and how Sikhs will worship in a Gurdwara. The children have compared this to other religious places of worship, looking at the similarities and differences with Christianity places of worship and Islamic special places. In our Incredible Us! session, the children worked hard with Mrs Akyel to create their own wooly Christmas Trees. They had to use their design and creativity skills to wrap a card Christmas tree with wool, and then decorate it using pom poms. Team DB had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed making their own wooly Christmas trees!
This year for Children in Need the these was Spotacular! The whole school were invited to wear non-uniform for the day - some children came wearing their spots! In Team DB, we had great fun finding the many spots that were hidden around the playground in unlikely places. The children also had great fun hiding the ones that they had found for the next class. In the afternoon, during our Incredible Us! session, the children decorated biscuits, coloured pictures and played games. Team DB had a fabulous day; take a look at our pictures below. Literacy
In our writing, the children have been discovering more about the text for this half term, and we have been using this as a hook into our writing. The children have been looking in detail at the text The Viewer, by Gary Crew, and it has had the pupils in Team DB mesmerised. The children have been interested in finding out more information about Viewers and how they were once a keen children's toy. They have also become fascinated at the various pictures depicted on the reels, and how some are not as pleasant as originally thought! The aim of their creativity in writing, is to write their own story setting of how they find a viewer, including the design of their very own reel, picking our historical events during their own lifetime. The pupils have been using their expanded noun phrase knowledge, developing their ability to choose awesome adjectives to enhance their own writing. Moreover, the children were learning about similes and metaphors as well as the importance of the five senses when describing a setting for a story. Maths: In Team DB, the children have been developing their addition and subtraction skills when using four-digit numbers. They have been using exchanges between the place value columns, as well using their fabulous addition and subtraction skills to find missing numbers in a calculation. They have been working very hard this week! Today in Team DB, our amazing children have been very creative in selecting their wear a word for the day outfits. It has been interesting to see each others' costumes as well as deciding if we can work out the word before reading it. This has helped immensely in expanding our vocabulary as we have walked around school, reading each others' words as we went. A huge welcome back to Team DB this week; it has been wonderful to hear all about the children's adventures during the half term holidays, especially their Halloween celebrations. The children must have had a good rest, because they have all returned to school ready to learn.
Science: This week in Team DB, we have been looking in detail at the Water Cycle as part of our States of Matter topic. The children have watched videos, discussed with their partners, used the laptops to discover all about the various aspects of the water cycle. This enabled the children to recreate a diagram, using their knowledge about the different states of matter, to label the different concepts of the water cycle. P.E. In P.E. this week the children have worked hard with Mr Smith focussing on their hand ball skills. During indoor P.E. the children are continuing to develop their skills and understanding with regards to Bollywood dancing, recreating the various hand position, hip and feet movements to eventually design their own Bollywood dance. The children in Team DB have been working very creatively this week in all areas of their learning. In writing, the children have been learning about Cinquain poetry and the pattern to follow when writing them. The class have been able to implement some aspects of their learning from the half term into their poems, adjectives, expanded noun phrases, verbs and adverbs of manner (feelings). The children enjoyed writing their poems about Halloween and all things spooky 👻🧙♀️. Maths: This week in our maths learning, the Year 4 children have been continuing with developing their understanding of addition and subtraction using the column method. The children have been investigating how to use the inverse operation to find missing numbers when trying to solve a calculation. This could be in an addend or in the sum, or the minuend, subtrahend or difference. The children are beginning to use their fabulous addition and subtraction skills to solve multi-step word problems and reasoning. R.E. This half term, Team DB have been looking in detail at the celebration of Diwali. As our religious focus for this year is Sikhism and Chrisitianity, Team DB have looked at the various ways Diwali is celebrated in other religions. The children have discovered how Diwali is celebrated across the world, across different faiths including Hindus and Sikhs, but how ultimately it is expressing the belief that good will overcome evil. The children have spent time sketching and designing their own diya lamp, to the recreate this using clay as a media. The children enjoyed this during their Incredible Us! time, later painting their Diya lamp using bright colours. Here is a collage of our creativity in R.E. below to celebrate Diwali. The children have looked in detail at the simialrities and differences of how Diwali is celebrated in both Hinduism and Sikhism. They have also retold the story of Rama and Sita.
Writing
This week the children have been very busy beginning their learning about transcriptional skills that we use in writing. As a hook to our writing, the children have been looking at the descriptional langauge used to describe different creatures found in Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them. The children have been discovering how JK Rowling uses powerful adjectives to describe the various animals, and how they can apply these into their own writing. Our ultimate purpose to use descriptional writing to create our very own Boggart, including writing our own Riddikulus spell (a charm that is used in defense of a Boggart) to overcome our fear! Maths Wow!! Team DB have been showing their amazing maths skills over the last few weeks. Year 4 children have contiuned to develop their column addition and subtraction skills, showing that they can exchange between the different place value columns. The children are now extending this knowledge to four and five-digit numbers. In Year 5, the children have grown in confidence when using decimal fractions, and are now using this knowledge to add decimal fractions up to 2 decimal places. The children have been using manipulatives to help them understand about these mathematical concepts. Science This week, Team DB have started their experiments about the States of Matter. The children have been investigating if temperature affects the rate at which ice melts. The children used the Dataloggers to record the temperature in the three different areas around school. The class predicted what they thought would happen, and how the fridge would be where the ice would melt the slowest.T hey observed the changes throughout the day, recording the level of water in each measuring cylinder. They concluded that their predictions were correct! |
Welcome to Team DBIn Team DB, we always love to share our amazing learning journey with others; where we post our work and photos for all to see. Take a look each week, to find out all about the wonderful learning we have been doing. Archives
