During the spring term Year 6 have explored the life and times of the Ancient Egyptians. We started by looking at the geography and chronology. We looked at where Ancient Egypt would come on our class timeline and considered when it was in relation to other historical periods and people we had covered. We compared ancient and modern maps and explored implications of position on land use. We were lucky enough to visit Tut 22 an exhibition at Experience Barnsley. We have looked at the work of famous archaeologists such as Howard Carter and influential historic and modern archaeologists. Egyptologists from Barnsley (Joann Fletcher and Ernest Jones). We have explored the importance of evidence and sources. Some of the key areas we have learnt about include: structure of society, religion and beliefs, importance of preparation for the afterlife, land use, leisure, roles of different individuals, importance of the pyramids, innovation and legacy. Pupils have had the opportunity to generate their own enquiry questions and carry out research. We have also made links across the curriculum and through conceptual learning.

RE - We have been exploring some philosophical questions based on how I and others feel about the universe around us. We have generated some 'big questions', We have taken the time to reflect on them, consider our views and opinions and shared our thoughts through class and peer discussion. This links with PSHE and geography concepts of carbon footprints and local farming and landuse. PSHE - We have been considering healthy choices and how to develop a healthy lifestyle considering nutrition, dangers of drugs and alcohol and the importance of exercise. Through our PE work and during circle time we have been exploring the need for rules and boundaries. What impact does exercise have on pulse rate? We carried out this investigation as a shared task. We drew conclusions based on our science learning about healthy lifestyles and the circulatory system. Pupils have now generated their own investigation questions and will be planning and carrying out their tests next week.
OBSERVATION OVER TIME is this half term's enquiry focus. This half term Year 6 have been trying to increase the amount of physical activity they do at playtimes. We have been measuring our pulse at the end of playtimes to see if there have been any changes.
