As part of our history topic, a very excited Team AC visited Barnsley Museum to find out about the similarities and differences between the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. The children were able to find out answers to our key questions through hands on experiences and workshops. They had many questions and were able to talk about their day by means of a recount. Children learned new vocabulary to help with their understanding and could see how ‘The Stone and Metal Ages’ followed chronologically. The children also had chance to explore the other historical eras throughout the museum and see how Barnsley had changed throughout history. They enjoyed finding out about Barnsley’s rich mining history and how children as young as eight would be sent down the mines through small, dark tunnels in very dangerous conditions. They linked this to the life of children in the bronze age, who had to collect the copper from the mines. The children had a very interesting and informative day to extend their understanding of life through history. The Cooper GalleryAs well and visiting the museum the children enjoyed visiting The Cooper Gallery in Barnsley too. Some children had never been to a gallery before and they were able to see lots of different types of artwork and compare this to the work they had completed previously at school. They talked excitedly about the different types of paintings with their different colours, shapes and images. They chose their favourites to draw and copy for themselves. The children also talked about how old the different paintings were and how they could tell which ones were older by looking at the details within the paintings as well as the different types of frames. A very enjoyable and educational day was had by all - even if there were a few tired faces on the coach home!

In Team AC children were asked what they understood about the word ‘bullying’. We discussed their ideas about what bullying is and what it isn’t. They talked about what we could do to make sure that didn’t happen at our school but also what we should do if we feel it is happening to us. They thought about what someone who is being bullied might feel like. They decided it was always best to tell a trusted person so that it could be sorted out to take the worry away. To start the week the children wore their odd socks as a way of recognising that we are all different but we have things that we share too. We focused on the idea of kindness and how we could all be kind to one another. The children shared their ideas and wrote them on circles to create our own class pair of kindness ‘odd socks’!
Team AC love their art! The children have produced some amazing artwork this term so far. They have looked at how we can develop our drawing skills by looking at how portraits can be changed from simple line drawings to more detailed work by adding shade, tone and colour. The children have also been introduced to the artist of the term, Barbara Hepworth. They found out who she was and why she was famous. They learnt about the type of art she created and talked about which pieces of her work they liked. They gave reasons for their choice and said what they thought each piece looked like. The children then made their own sculpture and said what was the same and what was different about their work and Barbara Hepworth's work. We've also managed to link our artwork to our history topic - looking at life in prehistoric times. The children found out about how Stone Age people communicated their ideas through cave drawings. They learnt how important these drawings were as evidence of the past. They then had a go at creating their own drawings. This week we have talked about why we have bonfire night. We looked at the history of bonfire night and why we celebrate every year. The children then acted out the gunpowder plot to retell in their own words. They used vocabulary including, history, parliament, plotters, evidence, treason and torture.
Children were asked the key question
Children watched a video of the events surrounding the Gunpowder Plot. They were given chance to make notes and discuss further key question
Children acted out the different parts of the story showing their ability to recount the gunpowder plot. We have listened to ‘Sparkle in the Sun’ and have learnt to sing this using the on screen words – the children are particularly good at the chorus. We have moved to the beat and discussed how the beat is ‘Steady’ like a heart beat throughout the song. We have discussed how the long notes are on the end of the lines in the chorus and we have used actions to show understanding of short notes (tap tap tap with fingers – jumpy notes) and long sounds (we opened up our hands wide to the length of the note). We have used the Glockenspiels to play a G drone, a simple GA pattern and a GAB pattern to accompany the chorus of the song. We have looked at the instruments and discussed how the higher pitched notes are smaller in size and the lower pitch notes are larger in size. The children were also made aware that there is more than 1 G note on the instrument and we played them to find out how they are different. |
