Last week in Team AC, the children worked in small groups to create a bridge sturdy enough to hold a Billy goat. They listened to the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Every team was successful and managed to keep the Billy goat safe from the big, bad troll!

This week we have been learning...
In maths about unit fractions and writing fractions in different ways In literacy we have started writing reports on mountains and collecting information in fact files. In science we have started learning about living things and what makes something living In art we have worked together to create a collage of the great wave. This week we have been learning... Literacy - about using speech in writing Maths - about Fractions (parts and wholes) Science - about forces and reviewing our learning from last half term so we are ready to begin our new topic. Teamwork + PSHCE - about the people on our new table teams, likes and dislikes and how to look after our new equipment. PE - about jumping and turning. In our summer term we will be learning all about what life is like in the seas and oceans.
We will be learning about :all the different creatures that live under water and learning how to classify them, the layers of the ocean and how they are all different from each other in terms of habitat features and how we can help sea creatures by reducing plastic waste and not polluting the oceans. What questions might you want to ask in class to find out more? What a busy week its been in Team AC! Literacy - this week we have written a recount of the story 'Ratty's Big Adventure' which is a book we have read all about a giant rat who lives in a volcano in Papua New Guinea. He wants to explore life outside the volcano but soon discovers its not quite the adventure he hoped for. We looked at what the features were for recount writing and made our own checklist to make sure we were checking our work carefully. The children worked very hard with their writing and will be presenting their work to each other so they can practise their oracy skills too. Maths - we have been looking at the relationships between different times tables and how we can use one timetable to help us work out another for example the 2 x table can help us work out our four times table. We have looked at using the correct vocabulary to help us with our understanding. Geography - this term we have been finding out all about rivers and mountains. We have started by looking the water cycle and learnt amazing facts about how the water cycle works and the fact that water that is on earth today is the same water that was around millions of years ago!! This week we have started to look at the different stages of a river and what the different features are called and how they are formed. We even made ourselves in to a human river to explore these different features. RE - This term we have been learning about community cohesion and how we can all help each other in our community. The children learnt that to do this we need to understand and appreciate different views and different faiths. We have learnt about special words, special books, special places and special times and what they mean to different groups of people. We have found out that Jewish people go to a Synagogue and learn from a special text called a Torah. They have special ceremonies at different times of the week, particularly Shabbat which is their holy time. They also prepare for ceremonies when they become young adults called 'Bar Mitzvah if you are a boy and Bat Mitzvah' if you are a girl. Team AC had fun looking at the artefacts and even trying some of them on as well as learning the correct vocabulary for them. Can't believe we're more than half way through January already. It was lovely to welcome the children back and listen to what they had done over the Christmas period. We are now back in full swing and already well into learning with our new Geography topic about rivers and mountains. We've thought about what we would like to find out about this topic and started to look at the importance of the water cycle when learning about rivers and mountains. Our literacy work has started with the book 'Ratty's Big Adventure' where we have started to write a recount of what Ratty did on his adventures when he ventured out of his volcano in Papua New Guinea.
In maths we have started to look at grouping linked to multiplication and division using practical activities as well as written representations. In RE we have been learning about 'How can faith contribute to community cohesion' and what it means to belong. We found out how important Shabbat is to Jewish families and what they do at this time of the week. As part of our history topic, a very excited Team AC visited Barnsley Museum to find out about the similarities and differences between the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. The children were able to find out answers to our key questions through hands on experiences and workshops. They had many questions and were able to talk about their day by means of a recount. Children learned new vocabulary to help with their understanding and could see how ‘The Stone and Metal Ages’ followed chronologically. The children also had chance to explore the other historical eras throughout the museum and see how Barnsley had changed throughout history. They enjoyed finding out about Barnsley’s rich mining history and how children as young as eight would be sent down the mines through small, dark tunnels in very dangerous conditions. They linked this to the life of children in the bronze age, who had to collect the copper from the mines. The children had a very interesting and informative day to extend their understanding of life through history. The Cooper GalleryAs well and visiting the museum the children enjoyed visiting The Cooper Gallery in Barnsley too. Some children had never been to a gallery before and they were able to see lots of different types of artwork and compare this to the work they had completed previously at school. They talked excitedly about the different types of paintings with their different colours, shapes and images. They chose their favourites to draw and copy for themselves. The children also talked about how old the different paintings were and how they could tell which ones were older by looking at the details within the paintings as well as the different types of frames. A very enjoyable and educational day was had by all - even if there were a few tired faces on the coach home!
In Team AC children were asked what they understood about the word ‘bullying’. We discussed their ideas about what bullying is and what it isn’t. They talked about what we could do to make sure that didn’t happen at our school but also what we should do if we feel it is happening to us. They thought about what someone who is being bullied might feel like. They decided it was always best to tell a trusted person so that it could be sorted out to take the worry away. To start the week the children wore their odd socks as a way of recognising that we are all different but we have things that we share too. We focused on the idea of kindness and how we could all be kind to one another. The children shared their ideas and wrote them on circles to create our own class pair of kindness ‘odd socks’!
Team AC love their art! The children have produced some amazing artwork this term so far. They have looked at how we can develop our drawing skills by looking at how portraits can be changed from simple line drawings to more detailed work by adding shade, tone and colour. The children have also been introduced to the artist of the term, Barbara Hepworth. They found out who she was and why she was famous. They learnt about the type of art she created and talked about which pieces of her work they liked. They gave reasons for their choice and said what they thought each piece looked like. The children then made their own sculpture and said what was the same and what was different about their work and Barbara Hepworth's work. We've also managed to link our artwork to our history topic - looking at life in prehistoric times. The children found out about how Stone Age people communicated their ideas through cave drawings. They learnt how important these drawings were as evidence of the past. They then had a go at creating their own drawings. |
