The children in afternoon nursery kept fit this afternoon with a spot of ribbon dancing. They made lots of large scale movements with their ribbons and then danced to the music.

The morning children enjoyed an active dance session with the Tumble Tots this morning. There was lots of opportunities to move in different ways and develop our gross motor skills as well as keep fit.
At group time this afternoon, the children developed their listening skills while playing their musical instruments and singing lots of nursery rhymes. Singing nursery rhymes is brilliant for developing an understanding of rhythm and rhyme and it also builds memory, supports speech development and listening skills too- "Rhymes make a reader!" There is research which shows the more nursery rhymes children can sing all the way through by the time they are four years old, the better reader they will be by seven years old!
The children took turns to choose a nursery rhyme spoon from our song box and then we all enjoyed singing and playing our musical instruments together. In our Maths learning this week we are learning to name and talk about 2D shapes so we have a new resource out in our classroom- tap-a-shape. The children have loved using the hammers and pins to tap the shapes into the board and make pictures. As well as all the talk about shapes, this is great for our fine motor skills as the pins are only tiny and we have to hammer them through the tiny holes in the shapes. This was a very popular activity and one I am sure we will have out again in a few weeks time! Look how hard we are concentrating in these photos!
To link in with our Maths learning about shapes, we have explored printing in our painting area. We used our small wooden blocks and discovered that when we dipped them into the paint and then pressed them onto our paper, we could make 2D shapes. There was lots of talk about shapes and we also used the words, print, press and dab as we worked.
We are really making lots of progress in our cutting and sticking area at the moment. Lots of children are now using the scissors to cut their own materials to add to their creations and we are learning to use sellotape as well as glue to stick materials together.
This week, some children have even decided to choose their own materials to create houses like in the three pigs story- what superstars we have in our nursery! We have developed our colour mixing skills in the painting area this week as we have learnt how to mix red and white paint to make pink. We then tried to use the pink colour we had mixed to paint our own pig from our story of the week. We talked about needing a circle for the head and we learnt the pig's nose is called a snout.
Here are a few photos of us being artists! Our journey into "Magical Storyland" is continuing this week with a focus on the story of The Three Little Pigs. This was a story which some of the children were already familiar with but for others it was brand new! Today we read the story together and used our character puppets to help us to act out the different characters. The children are getting really good at joining in with the repeated phrases in our stories and today we focused on the words of the pigs and the big bad wolf. "Little pig, little pig, let me come in!" and "Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down!" was repeated lots and we tried to use a scary deep voice. We changed our voice to that of a frightened little pig as we said "not by the hairs on my chinny chin chin, I will NOT let you in!"
Over the week we will be reading different versions of the story so we can talk about what is the same and what is different. We have added our character puppets to our small world area so the children can act out the story with their friends As we are learning about the story of The Three Little Pigs this week, we have been building our own houses in our construction area using our small and large wooden blocks. We learnt that houses need to be strong so they cannot get blown down easily! Some of us worked as a team and some of us worked on our own to arrange our bricks and then add the pigs. In our outdoor area, we worked as a team to build a brick house for the pigs. We learnt about how to stack the bricks to lock them together like real builders do and we found out that this would make our walls stronger! Once the house was built, we role played the story using our pig and wolf masks.
Today was Feel Good Friday and the children were invited to wear sporty clothes to nursery. This morning we had a go at some ribbon dancing to support our physical development. First, we practised lots of moves with our ribbons using both hands- large circles, up and down, across our bodies and a curved rainbow over our heads, Then we played the song Happy by Pharrell Williams and the children practised their moves to the music.
