Today the children in nursery had a very exciting job- decorating our nursery Christmas trees! Firstly, we sang a song about decorating a tree and we learnt the words: decorations, tinsel, beads, baubles and star, We also described them using words such as twinkling, bright, colour, shiny, sparkly, silver and gold, The children worked as a team to add the decorations to our tree and were very proud of themselves when they had finished.

The children in nursery have noticed that the weather has changed recently and it has been very cold and icy! Today they were super excited as it had snowed overnight. At group time, we spoke about how the season has changed from Autumn to winter and we spoke about the weather changing. The children learnt that they needed to wrap up warm for winter so after putting on our coats, wellies, hats, scarves and gloves, we went out to explore the snow in our outdoor area. The children were excited and there was lots of talk and exploration as they played.
Today we begun our learning about the nativity- the traditional story of Christmas and we have been learning lots of songs ready to perform to our parents in a few weeks time! We have read different versions of the story and learnt lots of new words including: stable, innkeeper, Bethlehem, shepherds and manger. The story supported our early understanding of History as we spoke about it being a long time ago and there were no cars so they had to walk and travel by donkey. We also spoke about how different the clothes were. In our provision, the children have loved dressing up as the characters, looking after baby Jesus (they were very gentle!) and delivering presents to the baby. We have also enjoyed our small world nativity scene and the children have loved playing together and telling the story with their friends. In our mark making area, we have been developing our pen grip and control while creating pictures linked to the story. There was lots of talk about the characters while they were busy working on their pictures.
It has been road safety week in school and we have been learning about how to be safe in nursery too. In our outdoor area, we got out our balance bikes and scooters and spoke about how we must always wear a helmet when we are riding them to keep us safe. We chalked a road onto our playground floor and the children learnt how to steer their bikes safely around. We added some hoops and cones and some children were able to move in and out of these as they rode. We also used the hoops as traffic lights and we learnt the rhyme "Stop at the red light, orange in between, go go go when it changes green." On our way to welly walk, we practised crossing the road safely on our school drive. We learnt to stop, look, listen and think before we crossed over. We know we need to look and listen for different vehicles that may be on our school drive. We sang a song to help us remember:
This is the way we cross the road, cross the road, cross the road, this is the way we cross the road, we stop, we look and we listen. We have continued with our learning about counting and matching an amount to a numeral today. The children counted the spots on the ladybird and showed how many they thought they were on their fingers. The children were encouraged to talk about what they noticed using the stem sentence "I can see......" They learnt to tap the matching amount on the screen. Some children chose to play the game independently during provision time and practised their skills.
Today was baking day in nursery and we made rainbow buns to link in with our theme of rainbows. The children followed a recipe and weighed and mixed all the ingredients. Then they added different food colouring to each bowl so they had different coloured mixture. Finally, they carefully spooned some of each colour into their bun cakes. We all agreed they smelt delicious as they were cooking!
Today we have been learning to count a group of objects carefully in our Maths carpet time. We used a game on the interactive whiteboard to help us and the children learnt how to play the game together by counting and then tapping the matching number. There was so much Maths learning as well as learning how to use the interactive whiteboard to play a game. In provision time, the children had the opportunity to play the game independently with their friends. They learnt to take turns to tap the screen as they realised it didn't work if more than one person tried to tap it.
This week our colour theme has moved onto learning about rainbows. We sang a song together with the rainbow colours and we learnt the words indigo and violet! We counted and found out that there are seven colours in the rainbow. In our mark making area, we have practised our skills by drawing and colouring our own rainbows. We practised holding our pencil in the tripod grip and tried hard to choose the correct colours. We also learnt that rainbows are curved and tried to make curved marks.
In our painting area, we are learning to be artists by mixing our own colours using powder paints. We have learnt to dip our brush into the water, then into the paint and then mix it up in the palette. First we learnt to mix powder to make red, yellow and blue paint. Then some children began to explore and made lots of new colours to talk about! We have also been washing our own palette to make it nice and clean for the next artist to use.
To link in with our colour theme of rainbows, we read the story of Noah's Ark in nursery and the children were challenged to spot the rainbow! They listened carefully to the story and were able to talk about how we can see a rainbow after the rain when the sun comes out.
In our small world and water areas, the children have loved using our Noah's Ark props and animals to tell the story with their friends. There has been a lot of sharing and turn taking as this was a favourite activity and the children had to learn how to play together and let their friends have a turn too. Well done, Shooting Stars! |
