In order to culminate our learning about Room on the Broom and celebrate our first half term together, the nursery children were invited to wear Halloween costumes today and we had lots of fun learning activities too. This morning we enjoyed dancing to some Halloween themed songs and playing some party games together. In our provision, we have been: -designing pumpkin faces in the mark making area with black pens -designing pumpkin faces in the creative area by sticking on different shapes -creating spooky pictures with chalks on black paper -reading different Halloween stories -creating spooky items in our playdough area In the afternoon, we went on a Halloween Hunt around the nursery. We had hidden different Halloween themed pictures for the children to find, We used lots of mathematical language as we searched high, low, on top of things, underneath things, behind and in-between things to find all the hidden items. Once we had found them all, there was even more mathematical learning as we sat together and sorted and counted them. We lined them up to help us count and pointed at each picture carefully so we didn't miss any out. We found out that the pumpkins was the most and the bats was the fewest. AMAZING work, Shooting Stars!

There has been lots of exploration, learning and talk today as we explored a pumpkin together. At group time, we sat in a circle and passed the pumpkin around so all the children had the chance to talk about it. They used the words big, orange and heavy to describe it. We also discovered that it rolled and the children loved rolling it to their friends across the circle. We then discussed what they thought would be inside the pumpkin and some children knew there would be seeds. We cut up the pumpkin and then left it in our tuff tray for the children to explore with different sized scoops and spoons, Some children also enjoyed using their hands! This was such a great sensory experience and there was so much talk and concentration.
Our new song this week is "Five Little Pumpkins" which is sung to the tune of "Five Currant Buns." At group time, some children held up numbered pumpkins and each time we sung, a child was chosen to come out and buy one from the vegetable shop. The children were all encouraged to show how many pumpkins on their fingers and then take one away each time one was bought during the song. We used the phrase "one less" to describe it and then could say and show how many were left.
The resources have been added to our provision so the children can explore, count and sing the song with their friends. In our phonics learning, we have been exploring rhyming words. At group time today we made a rhyming potion for a witch. We had a bag of objects but only those which rhymed with cat could go into the cauldron, We had to listen really carefully to hear the rhymes and we clapped and repeated them together to enable us to hear it- cat, mat, rat, bat, hat. Some of us were able to identify that dog was a trick and couldn't go into the potion as it doesn't rhyme.
Tomorrow we are going to collect words which rhyme with frog. Over the last few days, we have had magnets in our investigation tray and this has been a very popular activity. There has been lots of concentration and fascination observed! The children have loved exploring and talking about what they have found out. Some children decided to take their magnets around the classroom and found different areas where they would stick. We learnt the words magnet, magnetic, stick and attract.
Our book of the week is "Room on the Broom." Today we read the story and the children were encouraged to join in with the rhyming words and the repeated phrase "the witch tapped the broomstick and woosh, they were gone!"
In our provision, we have been using different props to role play being witches and create different spells and potions like the witch in our story did. The children have been thinking of their own magic words and using their imagination to decide what the spell or potion would do to someone. We have had lots of fun turning each other into frogs and making each other fly! This has provided such a lot of opportunities for the children to interact and talk with each other. Here is a photo of our Maths display which shows just some of our wonderful Maths learning from our first half term in nursery. We have been really busy and have explored Maths in lots of our provision areas!
In the painting area, we have been printing using different fruit and vegetables to link to our theme of Harvest time. We recalled how to dip them into paint and then press them onto the paper from our sponge printing last week.
The Little Red Hen in our story of the week uses flour to bake bread so we have added flour to our exploration tray this week. The children have been encouraged to use their fingers to make marks in the flour and they have made some fantastic patterns- circles, lines, zig-zags, spirals and wavy lines.
We have been busy creating our own Little Red Hen masks so we can re-tell the story with our friends. We practised holding our coloured pencils using a tripod grip so we could control it to add colour to our mask. Then we practised holding scissors correctly to cut out our masks. Some children managed to cut out their mask all by themselves- superstars!!
