In our Maths learning this week, we are finding out all about different shapes. Today we sung a song to help us learn the names of some shapes and we went on a shape hunt in our outdoor area. Some children were amazing at spotting shapes in the environment and were so motivated to keep looking!
In our provision this week we are: - using cutters of different 2D shapes in our dough area - creating collage pictures using shapes of different materials - threading using different shaped buttons - creating pictures using shape stencils - building with different shaped blocks - working together to complete different shape jigsaws and puzzles.

This week our Marvellous Me theme has moved onto learning about our houses. Today we read an information book all about different types of houses around the world. Then the children had the chance to tell us about their house. Some parents had shared photos of their house on seesaw so the children enjoyed looking at these and talking about them at snack time. We learnt the word house, flat and bungalow and we talked about bungalows not having an upstairs.
In our provision so far we have been building houses using different construction materials and some children also made a house using the shapes in the creative area. We have begun to learn about Autumn time today by exploring leaves in our investigation tray. We talked about how the leaves change and fall from some trees and the children enjoyed looking carefully at them through their magnifying glasses. Some of the children were so fascinated that they looked bigger through the magnifying glass! The children talked about their leaves using words: big, small. red, orange, brown, yellow and green. Tomorrow we are going to add some woodland animals amongst our leaves for the children to explore.
For our baking activity today, we decorated our own bun with chocolate. First we talked about the chocolate and how it felt hard. We also discussed how to make it runny so it could be spread onto the bun. Some children had the clever idea of melting it and we used the microwave. Then the children used a spoon to carefully pour and then spread the melted chocolate onto their bun- great for their fine motor skills. We left the buns until hometime and then we noticed that the chocolate had set and gone hard again- we have some budding Scientists in our nursery!
Our Maths song of the week is "Five Little Men in a Flying Saucer." At group time, we have been learning to sing the song and have been counting the aliens carefully. We have been learning to show how many aliens on our fingers and then take one away as the song progresses. In our Maths area, we have been exploring the props and book of the song independently and practising counting together.
We are learning and talking lots about our families this week in nursery. We have shared the book "Love Makes a Family" which has all different kinds of families in it. Lots of the children have brought in family photographs from home and have loved sharing these with their friends at group time. They have been able to talk about who is in their photo while their friends listened carefully. The photographs are now on display in our home corner to promote talk as the children play. We will also be talking about who is older and who is younger to support the children's early understanding of History.
At carpet time, we have been using the "Singing Hands" to help us learn Makaton signs for the different family members. This really supports the children's developing communication skills and helps everyone to be able to communicate with each other. In our provision, we are exploring the following: -using our mark making to create faces of different family members in the paints and the mark making area. -exploring cutters of different family members in the play dough area. -lots of books about families have been added to our reading garden. It has been wonderful to see how much our nursery children love books already! They are keen to look at books all through the different areas of provision as well as in our reading garden.
Here are some photos of us enjoying our books: Today we all had a go at our first food activity of the year- decorating our own biscuit! There was so much learning in this activity. The children used icing sugar and learnt to pour it carefully onto their biscuit and then spread it with their spoon. It was great for developing their fine motor skills! Then they chose sprinkles to add to the top and used their pincer grip to pick them up and sprinkle them onto their biscuit- there was so much concentration involved!
Throughout the activity, the children noticed that the icing was runny, wet and sticky and by home time it had set and gone hard- lots of Scientific learning here too. As part of our "Marvellous Me" theme, this week we are learning to name the different parts of our bodies. Our song of the week is "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and we will be singing different versions at group time to help us learn the body parts, We will also be singing a song called "Elephants have wrinkles" which involves pointing to different parts of the body. As the week progresses, we will be singing the songs fast and slow and also adding some Makaton signs.
Today was our first "Feel Good Friday" of the new year, The children and staff came to nursery dressed in their sporty clothes. Our sporty activity involved moving to music. We danced to "The Tumble Tots" action songs and the children loved getting involved. There was lots of opportunity to practise gross motor skills as they moved in different ways to the music.
