![]() Today we had a special Diwali celebration day in nursery. Diwali is the festival of lights so when the children entered nursery, we had turned off the main lights and had tealights lit and Diwali music playing. We began by watching a clip about a little girl who was getting ready to celebrate Diwali with her family. We saw her decorating the house, lighting candles, buying sweets, making special food and decorating outside the house with rangoli patterns. We also saw her special clothes and how she decorated her hands with mendhi patterns. In our provision, we had a go at lots of different activities related to this theme: In our creative area, we used cotton buds and brown paint (henna) to decorate hands to make mendhi patterns. We really had to concentrate to make our small patterns and it was great for our fine motor skills! In the outdoor area, we drew our own Rangoli patterns on the floor with chalks. We did them at the entrance to nursery as we learnt that Hindu's create them at the entrance to their home to welcome people. Inside we decorated rangoli patterns with pens and crayons and talked about the different shapes and colours. Some children also chose to design their own rangoli patterns with our colourful wooden blocks. We also had a go at some Diwali dancing using our floaty scarves! The children were fascinated by the tealights and candles that we had in our classroom so at lunch time we decided to make a dark den together. The children went inside to explore their lights and some children even read our Diwali story books by torch light! What a busy and fun-filled day we have had!
