This afternoon at group time, we used our musical instruments to create firework sounds. We played our instruments loud and quiet and we talked about how the drums made a good firework sound as the loud bangs sounded like some of the fireworks the children had heard. We also sang a song we have been learning throughout the week "It's Bonfire Night" and played our instruments along to the beat of the song.

This morning we had our welly walk in the outdoor area instead of the nature reserve but we still had lots of fun and there was so much learning! We played together in the mud kitchen, we built dens, we explored our water area, we had a go at some leaf rubbings, we rolled our large cable reels and tyres and much more! We are really playing together now and there are some lovely friendships forming. Here are some photos of our fun and learning:
![]() Today we had a special Diwali celebration day in nursery. Diwali is the festival of lights so when the children entered nursery, we had turned off the main lights and had tealights lit and Diwali music playing. We began by watching a clip about a little girl who was getting ready to celebrate Diwali with her family. We saw her decorating the house, lighting candles, buying sweets, making special food and decorating outside the house with rangoli patterns. We also saw her special clothes and how she decorated her hands with mendhi patterns. In our provision, we had a go at lots of different activities related to this theme: In our creative area, we used cotton buds and brown paint (henna) to decorate hands to make mendhi patterns. We really had to concentrate to make our small patterns and it was great for our fine motor skills! In the outdoor area, we drew our own Rangoli patterns on the floor with chalks. We did them at the entrance to nursery as we learnt that Hindu's create them at the entrance to their home to welcome people. Inside we decorated rangoli patterns with pens and crayons and talked about the different shapes and colours. Some children also chose to design their own rangoli patterns with our colourful wooden blocks. We also had a go at some Diwali dancing using our floaty scarves! The children were fascinated by the tealights and candles that we had in our classroom so at lunch time we decided to make a dark den together. The children went inside to explore their lights and some children even read our Diwali story books by torch light! What a busy and fun-filled day we have had!
We have a range of different activities for the children to explore relating to our theme of light and colour. Here are some photos of us exploring:
Our outdoor area is wonderful for developing the children's physical development and we have had lots of learning opportunities today. The children have been using our sports equipment- throwing, catching and kicking balls, balancing on stilts, rolling balls to knock over cones and trying to get a ball into the net.
We have also been manipulating big sheets, tyres and pegs to build dens and moving large construction materials to build vehicles. Other activities have included chalking on a large scale on our playground floor, digging in our large sand pit and climbing on the clamberstack. The children are getting really confident at climbing now and some children have managed to reach the top and swing on the rope- wow! In our investigation tray this week, we have been exploring gloop! Firstly, we mixed cornflour and water and then the children used their fingers to explore. There was some lovely language used to describe the gloop and some children were fascinated and spent a long time rolling and pushing it in the tray and then watching it drip through their fingers. Some of the words used to describe it were: sticky, wet, slippy, soft, hard, slimy and cold. What great Scientists we have in nursery!
Today at group time, we began by curling up small and counting to 5, then blasting off like a firework. We repeated this with counting to ten before blasting off and then we tried counting down from 5 to 0.
Our number song of the week is "Five Little Fireworks Standing in a Row." We learnt the song and then sung it together. There was lots of Maths learning! Firstly we gave out numbered fireworks to different children and we worked together to put the numbers into the right order. We showed 5 on our fingers and some children were able to show it in different ways eg 4 on one hand and 1 on the other or 3 on one hand and 2 on the other! Each time one firework blasted off, we took one away on our fingers and used the words one less to talk about how many were left. Great work, Shooting Stars! Today we have begun our new theme for learning with a focus on Bonfire Night and Fireworks! The children were very excited to tell us all about the fireworks they had seen and heard over the last few days. At group time, we learnt the Makaton signs for bonfire and fireworks and we watched some fireworks on our interactive whiteboard. We talked about the colours and the sounds and we enjoyed pretending to be fireworks and blasting off into the sky shouting "boom, bang, wheee, wooosh and pop!" Here are some of our provision activities so far this week: We have been creating firework collage pictures by sticking materials onto black paper using glue. Our focus words were "colourful, bright, sparkly and glittery" and we tried to use these words to describe our pictures. In our painting area, we have been creating fireworks using glittery paint to make them sparkle. We tried to create different patterns and used the words "circles, spirals, dots, zig-zags and lines." We used cotton buds to make our patterns which was really good for developing our fine motor control. We have also been creating fireworks using chalks in our mark making area. We tried hard to make lots of different patterns!
It was lovely to welcome our Shooting Stars back after the half term holiday today and we had a couple of new children join us too!
Our new theme for learning is "Sparkle and Shine" with a focus on colour and light and celebrations. Our core book this half term is "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?" This book is very repetitive and we will be reading it lots so the children can learn to join in and read the book for themselves! We have multiple copies in our reading area so the children can enjoy sharing and reading the book with their friends. In order to culminate our learning about Room on the Broom and celebrate our first half term together, the nursery children were invited to wear Halloween costumes today and we had lots of fun learning activities too. This morning we enjoyed dancing to some Halloween themed songs and playing some party games together. In our provision, we have been: -designing pumpkin faces in the mark making area with black pens -designing pumpkin faces in the creative area by sticking on different shapes -creating spooky pictures with chalks on black paper -reading different Halloween stories -creating spooky items in our playdough area In the afternoon, we went on a Halloween Hunt around the nursery. We had hidden different Halloween themed pictures for the children to find, We used lots of mathematical language as we searched high, low, on top of things, underneath things, behind and in-between things to find all the hidden items. Once we had found them all, there was even more mathematical learning as we sat together and sorted and counted them. We lined them up to help us count and pointed at each picture carefully so we didn't miss any out. We found out that the pumpkins was the most and the bats was the fewest. AMAZING work, Shooting Stars!
