Maths Over the past couple of weeks the children have worked hard to master the skill of subtraction. We started by discussing the symbol and what is happening to our numbers when we subtract. From this, we used a range of resources such as number lines, counters and base 10 to subtract. As our learning progressed, we moved into using the formal column method to subtract 2 two digit numbers crossing ten. Literacy Over the past couple of weeks Team JF have been exploring the book 'The Tin Forest'. We have read the book numerous times and discussed in detail the language, images and structure of this. We decided as the book was full of vibrant colours, we would write our own setting description of the jungle. We completed these this week and produced some amazing pieces! As we worked so hard, we presented them in class to each other with a cup of hot chocolate and a bourbon on the side! RE This week the children of Team JF have been getting in the Christmas spirit! We have been learning all about the Christmas story and the reason Christians celebrate . The children were excellent at retelling this and created their own story boards to sequence and identify the key points. We have had an amazing Autumn term! HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Maths Over the past couple of weeks, Team JF have worked INCREDIBLY hard to master addition of two digit numbers. This week, we started exploring addition when crossing the boundary. We begun by discussing everything we already knew about this operation (which was a lot). From this, we continued to use base 10 to make our numbers and position them correctly on the place value chart. As this is a skill we are already familiar with, we mastered the positions in no time! As our learning advanced, we moved into counting our ones and quickly realising that we didn’t have enough room for all of those! We knew already the tens belonged in their own column so we gave them over to our neighbour. After lots of opportunities to practice this, we became more confident in talking through each step to be successful. This is a tricky skill to master but the children have made me one very proud teacher, well done! ICT This week in Team JF, we learnt about sorting shapes using different criteria. We talked as a class about the different ways we can sort shapes, and did this together on the smart board. Some of us said that we could use colour, number of sides, and shape type in order to sort the shapes. As well as this we also discussed that we could use ‘less than’ and ‘more than’ sentences to create our criteria to sort the shapes (for example, less than 2 sides, more than 2 sides). We then worked with a partner to sort a number of shapes into different categories, before discussing our findings as a class. Science
This week Team JF took part in a seasonal walk in Wombwell. The children were incredibly observant whilst being very sensible and safe. As we set off from the school grounds, we started to look at the changes to our environment during this season. We stopped at regular intervals to discuss what we could see and why these changes were occurring. As we arrived at our destination (a large open field space) we split off into small groups to explore the surroundings and hopefully tick off some of the autumnal changes. I was so proud of the way the children conducted themselves and how engaged they were in their learning. When we arrived back at school, we looked closer and some of the findings we brought back and discussed these. We then proceeded to complete our investigation pro forma as a class to present our findings. Maths This week Team JF used their knowledge of the number system to begin comparing numbers. We started by using stem sentences to identify numbers greater than, less than and equal to. From this, we introduced the < > = symbols to replace the words. We had lots of opportunities to practice our skills using whiteboards and reading the statements we created together. We then had the challenge of choosing 2 numbers (represented in a range of ways) to create a number sentence with. I hope you have an amazing week off with your loved ones! Literacy
This week Team JF started a new unit of learning, poetry. To begin with, we discussed the word poetry and what it meant to us. From this, we rotated around the room to different adults to listen to a range of poems. As we gained a better understanding of the different styles, we started to think about what we liked a nd disliked a bout them. As the week progressed, we started to understand shape poetry and explore the features of these. We also started skill building to write our own shape poems. We had a session focused on alliteration and produced some amazing examples based on a range of images. RE This week we started learning about Diwali, otherwise known as the festival of light. The children explored what Diwali is and how it is celebrated. The children enjoyed discussing this and how this is similar to some of our own celebrations. The children created some of their own amazing Rangoli patterns and enjoyed listening to some traditional music too! Maths
This week Team JF continued their learning of tens and ones. We started by recapping our prior knowledge of this and grouping larger amounts into tens and then counting the remaining ones. From this we moved into representing these using Base 10. We first discussed the value of the resources and began counting. As our learning progressed with then began using the part whole models to help us determine the number we had made. The children were then given a range of values such as 3 tens and 6 ones to make using the resource s and identify the number the y had. Music This week in Team JF we explored beat and rhythm in music. We first listened to a song and decided what we did and didn’t like about it, we also discussed what instruments we thought might have been in the song. We then got into a circle and made some out our own beats by clapping, stomping and banging. We took it in turns to listen to one another’s beat and rhythm and then copied what we heard. We focused on our timing to make sure our beat sounded the best it could be. Literacy
Over the past couple of weeks Team JF have been working incredibly hard to consolidate their transcription skills. To begin with we focused on what good sentences should look like and worked on pour letter formation. From this, we moved into using full stops, finger spaces and capital letters. This week, we have started a new unit of learning based upon the book 'Gorilla'. We have read the book several times and incorporated drama into our literacy to freeze frame scenes from the story. As the week progressed, we moved into retelling the story and creating our very own story boards! These are absolutely fantastic and the children are very proud of what they have produced! Art This term Team JF have started our new unit of learning 'weather around the world', linked with our geography/science. To begin with we discussed and explored the four seasons, comparing real weather images with depictions of weather in art. From this, we started to think about the colours we may use to represent different weather types such as warm and cold colours. Maths Over the past couple of weeks Team JF have been exploring tens. We have discussed similarities and differences between 1 ten and ten ones, counted in groups of ten and explored what all multiples of ten have in common. This week the children continued their learning of counting in tens. The children first revised the multiples of ten before estimating and plotting them on a 0-100 number line. From this they were able to practically order themselves to create their own number line. We do have some amazing mathematicians amongst us! Pattern Seeking in Science
This week Team JF carried out our half termly enquiry based on pattern seeking. The children carried out careful observations around the school grounds. We decided to investigate and find the answer to our big question of where would we find the most insects? From this we discussed the similarities and differences between their habitats and why they might be the happiest there. After we carried out our investigation, we looked at our findings and concluded there was a pattern to the habitat and number of insects living there. More insects are found in dark, damp, sheltered spaces. |
