Maths
This week we have focused on coordinates and reflection and linked this with our RE, Islam. The children have looked at various Islamic patterns and created reflections of these using coordinates. Some fantastic patterns have been created with some beautiful colours. Literacy We began writing our scientific report this week based on the Polar Bear. It has been amazing to see how the children have transferred their notes into some quality pieces of writing. So far we have written the introduction to our reports and two other sections (appearance and food). It's been fantastic to see technical language appearing in all paragraphs. We will be continuing with this next week.

A huge well done to all Team LG for their hard work this week in Maths and Literacy. Throughout our lessons, we have worked with Mrs Longden and had a look at some previous Y6 SATs papers. We have been able to have a look at the types of questions that are on test papers and we have even had a go at answering them. This is all good practice and preparation for next year. Both Mrs Longden and myself have been AMAZED by your results and how clever you all are. Well done Team LG on producing some cracking results!!
I would like a to say how proud I am of each and everyone of you for your commitment to learning through what has been a very funny week. Even though I have been in and out of class, supporting with the Year 6 SATs, you have all remained engaged in your learning regardless of the changes to our timetable.
Maths As part of our lessons this week we have started to look at understanding angles as a measurement of turn. We began used a diagram to create a 'map', similar to a compass and used this to direct our partners to particular places around the classroom and around the hall. We had to give our partner instructions using degree turns as well as instructing them to turn clockwise or anti-clockwise. Literacy We have spent time publishing our pieces of descriptive writing, in preparation of them being sent to Mrs Lawson. Each of our 'I'm a Teacher Get Me Out of Here' team leaders has chosen one member of their team to present their work to Mrs Lawson. Next week we will find out who our winner is. In addition, we have continued to work on our reading comprehension skills, in particular finding evidence to support our answers. In addition to Maths and Literacy, topic, science, PE and all other areas of the curriculum, this week we began rehearsals for our end of year production - Park Street's Got Talent. Amongst the giggles, it has been lovely to see Team LG getting into character and already showing 100% commitment to the show. I would like to say a special thank you to those children who have been dedicated to rehearsing after school. Your passion for drama and performance does not go unnoticed.

Continuing with the same objectives as last week, this week we revisited calculating both the perimeter and area of rectilinear shapes that have missing measurements. Moving on, we were given a question such as 'The area of a rectilinear shape is 48cm squared. What does the shape look like'. We had to use our knowledge of area to draw all the different ways the shape could look. Some of us even managed to have a look at compound shapes. Literacy Our next writing focus is descriptive writing and to build up to writing our own piece this week we have focused on analysing the features of descriptive language. This included: strong adjectives, use of SPAMO, use of senses, interesting verbs and a range of punctuation. We then began further research on our habitats to build up word banks and mind maps to support us with our writing. Maths
During the week we have focused on the difference between perimeter and area. We learnt that perimeter means the distance around the edge of a shape, whereas area means the amount of surface covered by a shape. We started off by working out the perimeter and area where all measurements are given before looking at shapes with missing measurements. This is something we will be continuing with next week. Literacy Following a lesson on improving and editing our letters, we spent time publishing our writing. Our letters will now be checked over by our team leaders before being sent to Mrs Lawson. Towards the end of the week we began to look at prefixes, particularly 'de', 'dis', 're', 'mis' and 'over'. We looked at the prefix meanings and how the use a prefix changes the meaning of the word. Throughout our maths lessons this week we recapped simplifying fractions before focusing on multiplying fractions. We recognised that when multiplying fractions, the 'x' symbol can also mean 'of'. Through visually representing our calculations we soon realised that when multiplying we need to covert our whole number into a fraction. We can then multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. Once we have completed this step we can then simply our improper fraction to give a mixed number. Literacy At the beginning of the week we split into three teams: Team Longden, Team Baxter and Team Fidment. Each team was given a habitat to research: the Amazon Rainforest, the Arctic and the Sahara Desert (retrospectively). Following our research we began writing letters (using persuasive techniques) to convince Mrs Lawson to allow her staff to participate in 'I'm a Teacher Get Me Out of Here'. In our letters we had to include where our team captain would be sent and the benefits of the trip. We made strong links to the experiences that the staff would be having and how this would be an advantage for Park Street. Clever, don't you think? Maths
As it had been two weeks since our last lesson, we started the week by consolidating our prior learning of adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. Often our answers were left as improper fractions and therefore for we spent the rest of the week focusing on converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. Literacy This week we kickstarted our new topic - 'I'm a Teacher, Get Me Out of Where?'. Although the topic is heavily Science based, there are many elements that we can focus on during our Literacy lessons, including Persuasive Writing (our focus for this week). We looked at several forms of persuasive writing, including persuasive letters and analysed the features used. This was in preparation for next week when we will be writing letters to Mrs Lawson to persuade her to allow her staff to take part in a new TV series. Maths
This week in maths we have devised two rules when adding/subtraction fractions and then put these rules into place. 1. To add/subtract fractions the denominators must be the same. If the denominators are the same I need to add/subtract the numerators. 2. To add/subtract fractions the denominators must be the same. If the denominators are not that same I need to find an equivalent fraction. Once the denominators are the same I need to add/subtract the numerators. Literacy Throughout our lessons this week we have finished writing our Ancient Greek Myths. We spent time carefully editing our writing to ensure it was punctuated well and our spelling was accurate and we also made sure our writing was cohesive. We also worked with a peer to look for further improvements before publishing our work. Over the past couple of days we have focused on:
Explaining what an algorithm is and applying flow charts to represent one. Identifying iteration (loops) and constructing an example of iteration. The children worked in groups of four to create a short dance routine that they had to represent in a flow chart. In their working groups the children chose four dance moves to put into a sequence and recorded this using a flow chart. We discussed the use of iteration (a part of the flowchart that repeats itself) and applied this to our routines. After rehearsing each group then performed to the rest of the class to see if they could spot where the loop of iteration had been included. Top job Team LG - you performed some cracking routines. |
