This week we have been using Lego to make some fantastic creations. Even in a few short days the Rainbows were able to develop their designs to make them even better!
Rainbows have used Lego before but mostly have created models using the larger Lego Duplo. The smaller Lego has many more pieces of different sizes and shapes with different ways of connecting pieces together. The Rainbows were a bit unsure at first about what some of the pieces were and how to use them but soon had some great ideas after exploring. Here are some of the Rainbows hard at work! Can you guess what they are making?

We have enjoyed learning about George and the Dragon this week. This is the story about a fierce and mighty dragon who is afraid of mice!
We learnt lots of new vocabulary within the story and for some of the words we added actions. This included smash, terrified, trembling, cosy, fierce, screamed and groaned. We listened carefully to some sentences about the story and had to decide if we thought they were right or wrong by showing thumbs up or thumbs down. We made some freeze frames of little George and his emotions in the story. Can you spot how we feel? This week we have been learning about Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. You can see by the photos how much fun we have had in all areas of the classroom. We have been measuring amounts of cups of tea, making woodland cottages, retelling the stories, making wanted posters and doing lots and lots of reading!
It has been lovely to see the Rainbows developing their communication skills over the past few months and they are much more confident at playing games with a partner or within a group. Here are some of our activities this week. Here are just a few of the Rainbows who have achieved Incredible Me! certificates this week!
Well done Rainbows, we are so proud of you! This week it was the turn of the Rainbows to have an extra sports session with Mr Smith. Rainbows love keeping fit and jumped at the chance!
This involved listening carefully to the rules of the game and keeping themselves and others safe. The Rainbows had so much fun and can't wait for their next sports session! Our first story has been The Gingerbread Man and we listened to different versions. We also looked at the story in more depth and have been learning lots of new vocabulary, including vaulted, drooled, waded, tease and crumble. We even did some freeze frames to show how characters in the story were feeling.
There have been lots of different activities the children have taken part in. The Rainbows observed what happened to a gingerbread man when they placed him in water. They talked about what we could see happening and predicted what we thought might happen if they leave him there. A family of gingerbread people invaded our classroom too and the Rainbows were shocked to discover that at some point during the day someone nibbled one of his legs! After a very serious discussion the Rainbows decided that it must be the duck that lives on the desk. The Rainbows also found some of the characters from the story hidden in the classroom and had to read the word on their sheet and draw a picture of the character they found. They have also been weighing gingerbread men using the scales and counting how many blocks different amounts weigh and constructed bridges across a river so the Gingerbread Man doesn't get wet. This week on Welly Walk the Rainbows spotted some birds for the Big School's Bird Watch. First they looked at some photos of some birds and learnt their names. These included; robin, blue tit, male blackbird, female black bird, crow, raven, magpie and wood pigeon.
During Welly Walk the Rainbows tried to spot as many birds as they could. They tried to keep quiet so not to scare them away. Most of the birds were sitting high up in the winter trees but were quite easy to spot as there are no leaves at the moment. The most common bird we spotted was the wood pigeon and it was one of the biggest. They saw some crows and magpies as well and added a tally mark to the spotter sheets when they saw one. The Rainbows also enjoyed finding other signs of nature! This week the Rainbows followed instructions to carefully make Gingerbread Men.
They carefully weighed out all the ingredients and mixed them together. They rolled out the dough and used a cutter to make the shape. Here they are having fun learning! This half term our new topic is Magical Storyland. Each week our learning will be based on a different Fairy Tale or Traditional Tale. We have our Bedtime Story Day which is always lots of fun, and later in the term we will celebrate World Book Day.
The Rainbows love reading and are really excited to begin their new topic. |
