Oracy is a fundamental part of learning and development in EYFS and we provide many opportunities throughout the day for children to develop their oracy skills.
Before children access provision activities an adult will ask them where they would like to learn. The Rainbows are learning to extend their answer from pointing or saying one or two words to full sentences. This week we have been learning to say "I would like to learn......" Some of the children are learning to repeat the sentence back to an adult and some children have learnt to independently tell an adult where they would like to learn. For example "I would like to paint," "I would like to learn in the dough area," or "I would like to play with the magnets." We will continue to support oracy throughout the day everyday to support children's vocabulary and communication skills.

Rainbows have been developing our key listening skills and taken part in “Time to Talk.” This develops our listening skills. We have learnt to look at the person who is talking and keep eye contact. We also know we have to listen carefully to what is being said and have practised listening to some facts about Ginger Bear, her family and her friend Mopsy. If we listened carefully, we could remember the information to tell our friends. We also listened carefully to the poem "Teddy Bear Teddy Bear."
We also coloured a puppet of one of the characters we met today. We tried really hard to hold our pencil with the "perfect pencil grip" and to colour within the lines. We are already making progress developing our fine motor skills. We will continue to develop our listening and turn taking skills next session. Our learning this week was about family and we read Owl Babies. Owl Babies is this half terms core book and is a book we frequently read to be able to gain a greater understanding of the story, the characters, key vocabulary and key phrases that we can join in with.
Some of our activities this week have included playing “what is in the bag?” and matching sound cards and objects, painting pictures of our family, sorting compare bears into family, size or colour groups and placing pebbles on initial sounds of pictures. We have also been counting objects and matching them to the right numbers and drawing pictures of a special person in our family. In the painting area we have been using powder paints to mix different colours together. For homework we sent photos of our family to school. We shared these photos with the rest of the Rainbows and told them our family members names. We also talked about special times we have had with our family. Today was Roald Dahl Day and the Rainbows enjoyed listening to extracts from "The Twits."
They thought Mr and Mrs Twit were really mean and were so pleased when they were glued upside and shrunk into themselves and disappeared. Their favourite parts of the story were when Mrs Twit fed Mr Twit worm spaghetti and they were horrified when Mr Twit picked mouldy food out of his beard to eat! They found it hilarious when all the monkeys and birds glued the carpet and all the furniture to the ceiling so the living room was upside down! Some of the Rainbows loved the story so much they wanted their parents to buy them it too! Our second week learning phonics has been great and we are certainly enjoying learning new things! We have been familiarising ourselves with the Read Write Inc scheme and the silent signals including "My turn your turn," "Team stop," "Turn to your partner" and "1..2..3." We use these within our daily learning throughout each day too.
This week we have been learning the sounds m,a,s,d and t. We have been practising saying the "pure" sound (for example "t" not "tuh") which helps us to hear these sounds in words to read them. We have familiarised ourselves with the picture card of the sound, what the sound looks like and have practised our "perfect pencil grip" so we could write the sound. We are beginning to join in and say the phrase to help us write each sound, such as "down the tower, across the tower" when writing "t." Fred Frog has introduced himself to us and we know he speaks in sounds. We have listened carefully to the sounds he segmented and have tried really hard to blend the sounds back together to hear the word! We have even played some Fred games and worked out what Fred has had in his wardrobe and in his fridge by listening carefully to the sounds he says. We will be continuing with these sessions every day and learning new sounds over the coming weeks. Today was our first Feel Good Friday and what fun we had! We talked about how exercise is good for our bodies and what changes happen to our bodies during and after exercise.
We took part in some just dance activities including Mario and Aladdin. We copied the different moves whilst being careful of the children around us. We had so much fun, especially when the music sped up and got faster and faster! Our next Feel Good Friday is in two weeks time. We can't wait! This week we have been learning to subitise numbers to 3, make and describe spatial patterns with up to three dots, represent quantities on our fingers in different ways and identify subgroups up to three within larger arrangements. We have been busy!
We have used paper plates with dots on to help us recognise and recall dot patterns of up to three, and have used pictures and dinosaur counters to help us identify subgroups. During provision time we used blocks to make number blocks up to three, and some of us were making them in different ways! Every couple of weeks Rainbows will learn a new poem from "The Poetry Basket." Each poem has several lines to learn with accompanying actions and we are already off to a great start!
We will continue to practise the poem over the next week and hopefully publish a video to show you all of our hard work! |
