Our topic this week as been all about Pets! The Rainbows have loved this topic and have enjoyed talking about their pets at home. Thank you for sharing your pet photos on Seesaw!
Our talk through story book this week has been Kipper's New Pet by Mick Inkpen. Some of the words we learnt were; timid, giggle, rushed, stuffed, boring, surprised, crawled and nibbling. This book follows Kipper choosing a present for Pig's birthday party. The Rainbows thought this story was really lovely and loved following Roly Poly's antics! Rainbows have also been learning how to care for animals. They know that they need to care for pets by feeding them and making sure they have water, keeping their fur clean and healthy by brushing them and making sure they have regular check ups at the vets. Some Rainbows have enjoyed looking at books about pets and learning new facts about caring for them. They have also been developing their motor skills and creative skills by creating concertina animals by carefully folding paper and connecting it. Here we are in action learning about pets, and also talking part in provision activities, This week the Rainbows have been building dens in our outdoor area.
This has needed lots of team work skills including taking turns to talk, listening carefully to others and taking on board what their friends are suggesting. There has also been lots of problem solving to work out how and where to connect the tarpaulin sheets whilst keeping themselves safe. The Rainbows have demonstrated some perseverance when their ideas didn't work out the first time. Here are some photos of our teamwork! This week Rainbows have been asking each other about their favourite pets. They made a block graph to show their results.
Rainbows have also been learning about even numbers and have been using Numberblocks to help them. They know that Numberblocks with an even top have the same number of blocks in each of the two columns. They also know that number blocks with two different numbers in both their columns do not have even tops. Here are the Rainbows sorting the Numberblocks they made into two groups; even tops and not even tops, and asking their friends their favourite pet to make a block graph. Before the holidays the Rainbows were learning about changes. They decided to observe some bread, a carrot and an orange from the snack area over time to see how they changed.
After a couple of weeks the Rainbows were excited to talk about changes they had seen. They were surprised that the bread didn't look any different but it felt a lot harder. They described the carrot as "brown" and "mushy" and noticed that the top of the carrot had started to sprout and was growing leaves. We talked about moisture in the bag and that the bag was placed in the sunlight. The final piece of fruit had changed the most. The Rainbows described the orange as "green and white" and "fluffy." We learnt the word "decompose" and know this means that the fruit is breaking down into parts and has changed to be mouldy. We spoke about how important it is to not to waste food and eat it before it starts to change and break down/decompose. The Rainbows thought the mouldy food looked disgusting! Thank you so much to everyone who attended our parents assembly. The Rainbows loved showing you everything we have been learning about over the past few weeks. It was lovely to see how confident some children were in front of their parents and especially those who read their work to everyone.
We hope you enjoyed listening to the rainbows and seeing all our hard work! Here we are getting ready for your arrival! The Rainbows revisit their learning lots and lots to help consolidate it so they can move their learning on.
Learning is revisited within lessons, throughout the day, at the end of the week and throughout the half term. Rainbows display a learning journey in the classroom that showcases some of their work including writing, photographs of their learning and pieces of artwork. These visual aids help the children to remember the skills they have used and the knowledge they have learnt so they can explain their learning. It also enables adults to make sure children have a good understanding and to identify and correct any misconceptions. Here is our display from last half term where our topic was "Magical Storyland." Can you spot your learning? What did you learn about and achieve? This week we have been learning that Lent is an important celebration for some Christians. Rainbows know that Jesus went into the desert for 40 days to pray and be closer to God. They know that some Christians give up things they enjoy for Lent, especially rich foods. They talked about what they would give up and some of the ideas were biscuits, cola and yoghurt (because they love it so much!) Rainbows know that pancakes are made with ingredients from the cupboard that is eaten before Lent starts and that pancake day is also called Shrove Tuesday. We had lots of fun and made our own pancakes to eat, as well as having a pancake shop in our dough area.
Firstly the Rainbows talked about hygiene and how important it is to wash their hands and make sure the baking area and equipment is tidy, so we cleaned all these first. We know that we need to follow a recipe to make pancakes, or they will not work. We know that we need special ingredients and we need to measure it carefully. Rainbows measured and mixed to create the batter and Miss Hodgson cooked and flipped the pancakes! She even did ten flips! Rainbows then chose whether they would like a plain pancake or one with sugar/lemon juice. Every Rainbow was really brave and tried a pancake and some tried some lemon juice which they had not tried before. Everyone thought they were very yummy and wanted more! This week we have been learning all about mental health and how we need to keep our brain healthy and happy.
We have been taking "brain breaks" to help our brain slow down and keep us calm. We enjoyed the yoga activities and flew in a hot air balloon and on a magic carpet! We also did some mindfulness colouring and created some bookmarks by colouring in some tricky designs very carefully. We listened to the story "Ruby's Worry" and know that we can help our mental health by talking about things we may be worried about, as the worry shrinks until it disappears. Our class story vote books also helped promote our wellbeing and good mental health. This week our topic has been all about celebrating Chinese New Year. We have made some dragons in the creative area, learnt about China using books and globes and we have had the opportunity to try and learn to use chop sticks. We have explored Chinese New Year decorations and resources, written Chinese numbers, played a fun number game, listened to some Chinese festival music and made some Chinese lanterns.
Here we are having fun this week! |
