As we were learning about the seaside we watched Barnaby Bear on a visit to Poole being safe at the seaside.
We learnt that if we dial 999 we can ask for the coastguard who will come and rescue people that need help. We watched them rescue Barnaby's friends in their blow up dinghy and talked about how we can keep safe when we are playing on the beach. Rainbows know that their grown up must always be in sight and know where they are. They also know that if they are going in the sea a grown up needs to be there with them. Staff were really pleased to hear the most Rainbows either have swimming lessons or go swimming with their parents.

This week's Talk Through Story has been Lucy and Tom at the Seaside. Our vocabulary focus was arrived, remembered, paddling, dash, excitedly, bathe, rougher, turrets, moat, settle, several, burying, claw, row, packaging. We joined in with key phrases from the story and talked about the two problems in the story.
We also did some freeze frames; At last they’ve arrived! They walk down a rather long road carrying all their picnic things and bathing bags and buckets and spades. (excited) Tom likes being chased by the waves (happy) They settle down for their picnic. Several wasps try to join in. There are people flying kites and playing cricket and bard games. There are two little girls burying their fathers legs in the sand (happy/excited) See if you can work out which is which! This week we have been looking at how seaside holidays were different in the past.
We have been focusing on vocabulary including "past" and "present" as well as chronology and have talked about how there often isn't much evidence as technology was very different, and limited, in the past. Rainbows have enjoyed looking at books and photos and talking about what they see. Some have been very excited to talk about how they still take part in similar activities when they visit the seaside. Here they are researching the past. In maths we have revisited odd and even this week and also positional language.
We played a game with our partner where we had to listen very carefully to their instructions. We had to sit back to back and listen where we should place our cubes so we could make the same model as they had made. Vocabulary included above, below, in front, behind, beside, next to and on top. This was really tricky when we couldn't see! Here we are listening carefully and trying our best! Our story focus this week has been Lucy and Tom at the Seaside. It has been lovely to hear all about the Rainbows memories of their visits to the seaside too! There have been so many activities to help develop their knowledge and skills including;
Developing their PSE and communication and language skills in our seaside role play area, Creating lighthouses in the creative area, Using watercolour paints to create beautiful seaside scenes with beach huts, rock pools, zip lines and much more, Making five in different ways using shells and pebbles, Making lighthouses in the construction area and making them work! You can also see us busy in our outdoor area too! Rainbows often revisit their learning to help embed knowledge and skills so they can build on it with future learning.
Here they are learning about position and direction. They programmed our class robots "Beebot" to travel along the maps. The vocabulary they focused on was; turn, straight, forward, right, left and backwords. They challenged themselves by programming a few steps in one go, rather than one step at a time so they got to the destination faster. On Wednesday the Rainbows got the football feeling and took part in a penalty shootout! There were so many laughs and such a great sense of pride and team spirit! Rainbows were cheering their friends on and waited patiently for their turn.
Early Years has raised lots of money to help resource our outdoor area and we wish to thank each and everyone of you that sponsored. What a fun afternoon! Following our seaside theme for the week, Rainbows were tasked with making a lighthouse that worked!
They looked at some photos of lighthouses and discussed the features. They then used the magnetic shapes to build one. After they finished they added the torch, although some found they had to edit their design as the torch wouldn't fit. When they were complete the Rainbows wrote a label so they could add their lighthouse to the display! As the Euro's are well under way, football fever has hit school!
The Rainbows have been designing their own football shirts, supporting their fine motor skills development. The catering team have also been celebrating and have provided us with decorations and sweet treats with a St George's flag. Here are a few Rainbows we have celebrated this week. One is an Incredible Me! certificate and the others are Dojo awards.
What a fabulous week Rainbows have had, and we are so proud of their achievements! |
