Today we were learning to follow instructions by listening carefully to complete some Super Yoga. This was quite fast paced so we had to really listen hard and watch the screen carefully to help us follow the instructions. We had to position our body into lots of different poses. Some of them were stretched, some were laying on our back or stomach and some involved making small movements.
We tried so hard to follow the instructions and had lots of fun! We could feel our heart beating faster at the end of the activity!

This week we added the word "environment" to our vocabulary tree. We know this means the world around us. We discussed our school environment and that we have our classroom environment and also our woodland environment in our nature area.
We began talking about environments that might be further away such as deserts and rainforests. We will continue to learn about this word over the next few weeks and use it when we are learning. This week we have been learning about number four. Number four number block has been helping us.
Number four has been changing the order of his blocks and we have been describing what we can see. We said "I know there are four because I can see two and two" and "I know there are four because three and one more make four." We have also been describing where the blocks were placed on the number block, and have followed instructions to create dot patterns of the number block. We used words including "on top" "underneath" and "next to." We also continued to subitise numbers to three. We are learning that even though dots are in different places, there are still the same amount if you don't add any or take any away. We are getting quicker subitising with our flash cards! This week our learning has been about Autumn. We have taken part in lots of different Autumn activities including matching items of clothing to weather pictures and explaining why we would wear those items, making Autumn wreaths and Autumn monsters in the creative area, matching pictures to the initial sound cards and sculpting dough to create hedgehogs!
On Welly Walk we went on a scavenger hunt! We collected green, yellow, orange and brown leaves and then matched them to the correct colour card. We started to describe some of the words and said some were "soft" "crunchy" and "crispy." We also collected some other items including sycamore seeds, alder seeds, feathers, twigs and acorns. We brought them back to our classroom to add to our autumn area. Oracy is a fundamental part of learning and development in EYFS and we provide many opportunities throughout the day for children to develop their oracy skills.
Before children access provision activities an adult will ask them where they would like to learn. The Rainbows are learning to extend their answer from pointing or saying one or two words to full sentences. This week we have been learning to say "I would like to learn......" Some of the children are learning to repeat the sentence back to an adult and some children have learnt to independently tell an adult where they would like to learn. For example "I would like to paint," "I would like to learn in the dough area," or "I would like to play with the magnets." We will continue to support oracy throughout the day everyday to support children's vocabulary and communication skills. Rainbows have been developing our key listening skills and taken part in “Time to Talk.” This develops our listening skills. We have learnt to look at the person who is talking and keep eye contact. We also know we have to listen carefully to what is being said and have practised listening to some facts about Ginger Bear, her family and her friend Mopsy. If we listened carefully, we could remember the information to tell our friends. We also listened carefully to the poem "Teddy Bear Teddy Bear."
We also coloured a puppet of one of the characters we met today. We tried really hard to hold our pencil with the "perfect pencil grip" and to colour within the lines. We are already making progress developing our fine motor skills. We will continue to develop our listening and turn taking skills next session. Our learning this week was about family and we read Owl Babies. Owl Babies is this half terms core book and is a book we frequently read to be able to gain a greater understanding of the story, the characters, key vocabulary and key phrases that we can join in with.
Some of our activities this week have included playing “what is in the bag?” and matching sound cards and objects, painting pictures of our family, sorting compare bears into family, size or colour groups and placing pebbles on initial sounds of pictures. We have also been counting objects and matching them to the right numbers and drawing pictures of a special person in our family. In the painting area we have been using powder paints to mix different colours together. For homework we sent photos of our family to school. We shared these photos with the rest of the Rainbows and told them our family members names. We also talked about special times we have had with our family. Today was Roald Dahl Day and the Rainbows enjoyed listening to extracts from "The Twits."
They thought Mr and Mrs Twit were really mean and were so pleased when they were glued upside and shrunk into themselves and disappeared. Their favourite parts of the story were when Mrs Twit fed Mr Twit worm spaghetti and they were horrified when Mr Twit picked mouldy food out of his beard to eat! They found it hilarious when all the monkeys and birds glued the carpet and all the furniture to the ceiling so the living room was upside down! Some of the Rainbows loved the story so much they wanted their parents to buy them it too! Our second week learning phonics has been great and we are certainly enjoying learning new things! We have been familiarising ourselves with the Read Write Inc scheme and the silent signals including "My turn your turn," "Team stop," "Turn to your partner" and "1..2..3." We use these within our daily learning throughout each day too.
This week we have been learning the sounds m,a,s,d and t. We have been practising saying the "pure" sound (for example "t" not "tuh") which helps us to hear these sounds in words to read them. We have familiarised ourselves with the picture card of the sound, what the sound looks like and have practised our "perfect pencil grip" so we could write the sound. We are beginning to join in and say the phrase to help us write each sound, such as "down the tower, across the tower" when writing "t." Fred Frog has introduced himself to us and we know he speaks in sounds. We have listened carefully to the sounds he segmented and have tried really hard to blend the sounds back together to hear the word! We have even played some Fred games and worked out what Fred has had in his wardrobe and in his fridge by listening carefully to the sounds he says. We will be continuing with these sessions every day and learning new sounds over the coming weeks. Today was our first Feel Good Friday and what fun we had! We talked about how exercise is good for our bodies and what changes happen to our bodies during and after exercise.
We took part in some just dance activities including Mario and Aladdin. We copied the different moves whilst being careful of the children around us. We had so much fun, especially when the music sped up and got faster and faster! Our next Feel Good Friday is in two weeks time. We can't wait! |
