This week we have been revising learning about odd and even numbers. We made our favourite number block and identified if they had a flat top (even top.) We sorted the number blocks into odd and even groups and explained why.
We also practised counting in twos to help us identify even numbers and counted past 20! What an achievement!

There have been lots of activities this week about healthy eating as our topic for the next fortnight is based on the stories Oliver's Fruit Salad and Oliver's Vegetables.
We have been identifying healthy foods and buying and selling them in our Greengrocers shop. We have designed healthy meals, explored different fruit and so much more. We have been enjoying learning inside and outside developing our skills with our friends. This week we set up our role play area as a team! We have been learning about healthy food and wanted a Green Grocer's shop to help us.
First some of us sorted the fruit and vegetables into groups and we named each one. We learnt some new vocabulary including pomegranate which we had not heard of before. Some children used their phonic knowledge to write some labels for the fruit and vegetables which we stuck on the containers in the shop. We wrote some shop signs and some open and closed signs for our shop as well. We needed some money so we could buy our fruit and vegetables so we identified different coins and sorted them into groups to add to our till. We talked about giving change if we had paid too much. We can count in 2s and 10s and some of us can count in 5s so we added these coins to the till as well. We wrote some price labels to add so we knew how much each item was. What a team effort! We even practised shouting to attract customers to a shop, just like the green grocer at the market! Here is a small selection of independent writing that the Rainbows have chosen to do during provision time.
Aren't they AMAZING! What a fantastic experience Rainbows have had today! We had a visit from Michaela at Lion Learners and she bought in some animals for us to meet. We did some very carefully listening about how to handle the animals, and how important it was for us to wash our hands before and after handling the animals. We got to meet Timmy the Royal Python, Spinderella the Tarantula, Claude the Bearded Dragon, Nina the Guinea Pig and Xena the Millipede. Michaela demonstrated how to safely interact with the animals and made it clear that if we didn't want to hold or touch them we didn't have to. She gave a choice if we could like to hold some of them, stroke them or have them placed on our leg. While we were holding the animals she told us some really interesting facts. Here are a few of them; The millipede came from Thailand (Frankie) The snake was a Royal Python (Jude) A long time ago snakes had legs (Olivia P) The Bearded Dragon eats grasshoppers (Mylah) The Bearded Dragon lives in the desert (Theo) The Bearded Dragon has a special "third eye" on top of his head. Some of the Rainbows (and staff) definitely faced their fears and it was wonderful to see the Rainbows so brave, and so engaged with the animals and when listening to Michaela. Here we are having an AMAZING time, and one of the Rainbows said "It's the best day EVER!" We even got to see Claude eat a grasshopper! Check out the videos below.
We have had so many awards this week here are just a few of the Rainbows we have celebrated. You can see some Incredible Me! certificates for phonics learning and some Dojo certificates for achieving 100 dojo points! This means the children get to spend some special time with either Mrs Fitchett or Mr Smith and are able to take part in a creative or sports activity.
You can also see our Golden Book award for being resilient when learning new things and trying their best, and also our Starbooks award! Well done superstars! Here is this weeks Road Safety Champion! It was very hard to pick this week but she demonstrated excellent care and attention when crossing the road to and from Welly Walk.
Well done for being so safe! Rainbows have had another historical object to explore this week; a miners lamp. They identified that it was made from metal and glass and we talked about how it was much safer than using a candle on their helmet. We have been using the words "A long time ago" and "the past" to help us explain about history.
The Rainbows were very interested in the topic of mining, which of course is so important within our community. We looked at some photos of coal mining and talked about the process including the use of pit ponies and how children had to help in the mine! Some of the children did some independent writing about the miners lamp and mining as they found it very interesting. Two Rainbows have read the class a story this week! How brave are they?! Over the past couple of weeks in phonics some of us have been reading "The Spell" and "Black Hat Bob." The Spell is about Stitch the Witch who tries to turn her naughty cat into a frog, and Black Hat Bob is about Red Hat Rob trying to steal all his money!
Here are the superstars who read their story to the class. We are immensely proud and everyone enjoyed your stories so much! The Rainbows were a fantastic audience and sat quietly and listened carefully too! We began by all reading together "Big, Bad Bug" by Oxford Owl and talked about how dad tricked the children and made a big bug out of a potato! We then matched some sentences to the correct picture from the story, but we had to read them very carefully as some of them had mistakes in.
Rainbows have been using their phonics skills to read independently as well. Some of us have been "Fred Talking" to read CVC words and matched them to the correct picture. Some of us have been matching simple sentences to pictures and some of us have been matching complex sentences with different digraphs and tricky sight words. We have been practising our Read Write Inc. skills and some of us can now confidently segment and blend in our head ("Fred in your head") to read words. Some of us are becoming very speedy readers now! It has been fabulous to see the Rainbows accessing these activities independently during provision time too, as well as reading the books they have been reading in phonics. We are proud of you Rainbows! |
