In preparation for the school closure, please find below information relating to home learning programmes. You will find some details regarding the core subjects (Reading, Writing, Maths) and how these can be accessed each day. In addition to this, you will find some information regarding other curriculum areas as well as a suggested timetable to structure your child's daily learning. These activities have been carefully resourced to ensure that learning can continue as much as possible whilst the school remains closed. Please note that these materials are exactly the same materials as those that will be sent home with the children tomorrow. During our lessons this week, we have worked on finding the area of a shape. We know that to calculate the area of a rectangle we need to multiply the length of the shape by its width. We worked on finding the area of regular rectangles and then were given an area and had to find out all the possible dimensions of the rectangle. Next week, we will be focusing on finding the area of compound rectilinear shapes. Literacy This week, we have began a new unit - poetry. We have looked at a range of poems and found the similarities and differences. We identified many features including similes, personification, alliteration, metaphors and onomatopoeia and began generating our own examples of these features. Next week, we will be writing our own poems linked to the war. Maths
We began the week by focusing on the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. To begin with, we did this using concrete materials (square tiles), before applying this to abstract questions. We had to use our knowledge in relation to the properties of rectangles and squares in order to find the length of the missing sides on some of the shapes. We then revisited the written method for dividing by a single digit number and then applied this to word problems. We discussed the language used in worded questions and what this means. The questions required us to use our knowledge of other areas of maths including conversion and money and apply this to division, Literacy Following on from a reading comprehension paper about underage soldiers fighting in WW1, we discussed the opinions that different people may have about this topic (parents, siblings, the government etc). We also continued to look at features of newspapers and finished an article by writing in the missing feature: headline, 5W introduction and captions. Next week, we will be writing our own newspaper articles about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the start of the war. Maths
We had a look at the short written method for division - the bus stop method. We used manipulatives to demonstrate how the method works, particularly focusing on when a digit has to be exchanged. Afterwards, we started to use the written method in an abstract form and learnt to carry our calculation into decimal places instead of leaving our answer with a remainder and before long we were looking at problems including missing digits. Throughout the week, we revisited the written method for long multiplication. We briefly touched on this before the Christmas holiday however we weren't consistent enough in using the method accurately. After working on the method for another week and beginning to apply it to reasoning problems, we are a lot more confident in answering long multiplication questions and understanding how the process works. Literacy The start of a new term meant the start of a new book - Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. Set in World War One, the book reflects on a young boy's life from the trenches. We were taken back to Tommo's first day at school and analysed his feelings towards this using Point, Evidence, Explanation (PEE). As we continued to read we discussed the pressures that some families faced when the First World War was taking place and how they had to adhere to the rules set by the Colonel. Alongside this, we also analysed the features of a newspaper report and looked at two examples of reports from newspapers written in 1914. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member of our class for their hard work, commitment and resilience this term. It has been wonderful to observe your positive attitudes to learning and determination to succeed.
On behalf of all staff in Team LG, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope you have a fantastic two week break and a well deserved rest. See you in 2020! Miss Garratt x A huge well done to all members of Team LG and Team LL for their fantastic performance at St. Mary's Church, Wombwell yesterday afternoon. Every child sang their hearts out and made us feel really proud. A special well done to all our readers and soloists!

This week we had a look at the written method for multiplication, when multiplying by a two digit number. We have found this a challenge and it something we will need to revisit after the Christmas holidays. Literacy During our lessons, we finished publishing our newspaper reports in relation to the Lundhill Colliery Disaster in 1857. We added a headline to grab the reader's attention, as well as an image and caption relating to our articles. We are the next generation of journalists so watch out - our stories will hit the news soon! |
