Team LG and Team LL enjoyed their Christmas party this afternoon. We began with a buffet of sandwiches, pizza, sausage rolls, carrots, cucumber, cake and jelly. Afterwards, we enjoyed party games including pass the parcel, musical statues and four corners. Well done to all our winner - enjoy your sweets!

A great performance at Shipcroft Community Centre today. We sang our hearts out and put on a fantastic show for all those who attended. Well done Team LG!
If you missed out on our amazing singing you can join us at St. Mary's Church on Thursday 19th December where we will be performing alongside Team LL. Maths
This week we have been busy creating 'factor bugs' to ensure we were identifying all factor pairs of given numbers. We found this challenging to begin with to make sure we identified all factors. However, after a bit of practice and working on a strategy to make sure we had all factors we realised we could do it! Yesterday, we had a special visitor in school who complimented on our focus and engagement in our Maths lesson. Well done Team LG! Literacy Throughout our lessons this week we have worked on identifying features of newspaper reports. We recognised that quite often sentences in newspapers contain additional information in brackets and we learnt that this is called parenthesis. We were given the task of identifying if brackets had been used correctly and then had to input brackets into sentences of our own. In addition to this, we have been conducting research about Lundhill mining disaster in preparation for writing our own news articles. Today (Friday), we were lucky to have a visit from Mrs Hitchens who grew up within a coal mining family. She told us all sorts of information and opened our eyes to a world that is completely different from our own. Maths
During our lessons we have focused heavily on the times tables, learning tricks to work out multiples of numbers and applying our knowledge to reasoning questions. Literacy We have continued producing our piece of atmospheric writing, using techniques identified in similar examples and a video stimulus to generate our ideas. Our writing is full of fronted adverbial phrases, expanded noun phrases and suspense. We hope our intended audience enjoy reading our published pieces. A huge well done to all Team LG for their effort and commitment during assessment week. I am very proud of each and everyone of you!

During our lessons this week we have consolidated our knowledge of column subtraction, focusing on questions that contain two five digit numbers, questions that contain a five digit number subtract a four digit number and questions based on decimals. As we had remembered all tips given to us before the holidays we were super speedy. So, we were able to quickly move on to subtracting across zeros. This is something we have found a little more challenging. However, we are persistent and we will master it! Literacy We have started our new writing unit based on atmospheric writing. We watched a video called 'Dracula's Whitby', which took us on a computerised tour of the abbey. This is our hook and stimulus for writing and we can not wait! We have analysed the text features of atmospheric writing (simple and complex sentences, expanded noun phrases and imagery). On Wednesday and Thursday, we focused on identifying main and subordinate clauses, part of the build up to simple and complex sentences which we are looking at next week. Maths
We have continued to consolidate the written method for column addition, applying it to worded problems that require us to reason. Literacy Throughout our lessons this week we have continued reading Dracula. The Count has made his way to London and Professor Van Helsing has arrived from Amsterdam to treat Lucy's mysterious illness. We are all extremely excited to read on next week to see if Lucy recovers. In our SPAG lessons we have been working on the past tense and prepositional phrases. We will be applying these features to our assessed piece of writing next week. Maths
This week we focused on the written method for addition, adding numbers with up to five digits. This included adding two five digit numbers, two numbers with a differing amount of digits and nubers with decimals. We then began to apply this back to part/part whole models and bar models to support our worded problems. Literacy Our hook into learning this week was to build a scrapbook linked to our Whitby trip. We then looked a piece of recount writing and have analysed the text features used (first person, past tense, prepositional phrases). We will be focusing on these elements next week in our SPAG lessons. On Friday 27th September, Team LG took a trip to Whitby as part of their Geography topic. The children and staff took a boat ride on Captain Cook’s Bark Endeavour, walked up the iconic 199 steps and headed to Whitby Abbey itself for an educational workshop led by the Abbey staff. The children experienced what it was like to be a monk by dressing up in costume and handled archaic items such as keys, coins, pots and writing books. Unfortunately, the tide was out whilst in Whitby, which meant we didn’t get chance for a spot of crabbing. However, it did mean we had the time to visit John Freeman’s art gallery instead. The children even got the chance to meet him and ask questions!
