Maths
Throughout our maths lessons this week, we have focused on simplifying fractions, multiplying fractions by a whole and finding fractions of amounts. We have worked extremely hard to get through all this in one week but have now finished our unit of work on fractions, just in time for residential next week. We had the opportunity to consolidate our learning and demonstrate what knowledge we have retained through a game of Kahoot. Literacy This week, we have really got into our class reader 'Who Let the Gods Out'. We have read several chapters of the book and completed various comprehension activities based on our reading. It has been great to get to know the characters a little bit more and we cannot wait to read the next part of the book. Some of us have already begun to question whether Elliot is actually a God in disguise.

On Tuesday 26th March, Team LG will be working with Mr Fidment and a fellow officer from the cadets. During Spring 1, the children were extremely inquisitive about the lives of young soldiers during WW1. We read and listened to Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’, which sparked the interest of the children to learn more about the life of child soldiers. To link with our PE curriculum, we are running a young soldiers training camp all day on the 26th March. This will take place in the school’s nature reserve or school hall, depending on the weather. Please could you ensure that your child brings two appropriate sets of clothes and some sensible shoes to participate in this activity. As we will be outside all day (if the weather allows us), we recommend that your child brings a jumper and a coat for the activities also. Your child will need to arrive in school uniform and then they will be given time to change into their appropriate clothing. Due to the current weather conditions, please be aware that the children’s clothing may get muddy and therefore it would be appropriate to send clothes/shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty.

We have continued our work on fractions this week by looking at equivalent fractions. We discussed that equivalence means 'the same' and used this to create bar models of fractions to show fractions that were equal to one another. After we had used visual representations of fractions we were able to see the link between multiplication and division strategies and used these to find equivalent fractions. Literacy This week we have started working towards writing an Ancient Greek myth. On Monday, we had a visit from a Greek villager called Thespina, who told the class her problem and how she conquered the Scorpidon that had been terrorising the town. After Thespina's departure, we began to identify the features used in Greek mythical writing. A lot of our literacy work this week has been cross-curricular to enable us to have a secure understanding of who the Ancient Greeks were in order for us to write our own myths next week. We particularly focused on Greece itself, buildings and houses in Ancient Greece, clothing, Greek Gods/Goddesses and mythincal creatures (hybrid animals). Well done to all Team LG members who have completed Bikeability this week (Level 1 and Level 2). The team were super impressed with your outstanding behaviour and fantastic listening skills. Happy riding on the roads and stay safe!

Throughout our lessons this week we have started our Fractions topic. We initially discussed what a fraction was and the meaning of the numerator and denominator. We learnt that the denominator tells us how many equal parts to split our whole into (shape, amount) and that the numerator tells us how many of those parts we need. Following on from this, we began to look at find a fraction of a shape and the importance of making sure our whole was split into equal parts. We were then able to link this with finding a fraction of an amount. Literacy This week during literacy lessons we have focused on war poetry, particularly poetry written during and after the First World War. We looked at the author's choice of language, in particular figurative language (smiles, personification, alliteration, metaphors and onomatopoeia) and how this impacts on the reader. Towards the end of the week, we wrote our own poems, concentrating on imagery used within poems and how our language choice would the pictures we are creating in the readers' minds. Maths
We began the week by focusing on the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. To begin with, we did this using concrete materials (square tiles), before applying this to abstract questions. We had to use our knowledge in relation to the properties of rectangles and squares in order to find the length of the missing sides on some of the shapes. We then revisited the written method for dividing by a single digit number and then applied this to word problems. We discussed the language used in worded questions and what this means. The questions required us to use our knowledge of other areas of maths including conversion and money and apply this to division, Literacy Following on from a reading comprehension paper about underage soldiers fighting in WW1, we discussed the opinions that different people may have about this topic (parents, siblings, the government etc). We also continued to look at features of newspapers and finished an article by writing in the missing feature: headline, 5W introduction and captions. Next week, we will be writing our own newspaper articles about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the start of the war. Maths
We began the week looking at fact families for multiplication and division and soon came to realise that there are eight different facts we can find from three numbers. Following on from this we had a look at the short written method for division - the bus stop method. After a quick recap we started to carry our calculation into decimal places instead of leaving our answer with a remainder and before long we were looking at problems including missing digits. Literacy The start of a new term meant the start of a new book - Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. Set in World War One, the book reflects on a young boy's life from the trenches. We were taken back to Tommo's first day at school and analysed his feelings towards this using Point, Evidence, Explanation (PEE). As we continued to read we discussed the pressures that some families faced when the First World War was taking place and how they had to adhere to the rules set by the Colonel. Alongside this, we also analysed the features of a newspaper report and looked at two examples of reports from newspapers written in 1914. I would like to thank all members of Team LG for a fantastic term. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Have a very well deserved rest, take care and most of all stay safe. I look forward to seeing you all in 2019!
Love, Miss Garratt x A huge well done to all members of Team LG and Team LL for their effort and commitment to producing a fantastic Christmas performance for parents. Well done to all the narrators, actors and choir members. You were all fab in your own way!
Maths
Throughout our lessons this week, we have focused on plotting and finding coordinates in the first quadrant. We were given the opportunity to explore this using various games online. Then, we were given coordinates to plot on paper, which resulted in a Christmas picture being created. Literacy This week, we wrote a set of instructions on 'How to make a Christmas card'. We initially wrote our draft on paper before we published them using Microsoft word. This allowed us the chance to add borders, change the font, colour and size of our text and copy and paste images from the internet. |
