Assessment week
A huge well done to all Team LG members for their efforts this week whilst completing assessments in Maths and Literacy. I am pleased to see how you have applied what we have been doing in class into your test answers. The hard work is definitely paying off and can be seen in your scores. Well done everyone!

Maths
We began the week by focusing on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000. Following on from this, we looked at applying our times tables knowledge to questions such as 6,000 x 4,000 and 8,100 ÷ 900. Towards the end of the week, we had the opportunity to work on a new skill - multiplying a four digit number by a two digit number. As this was the first time we had been introduced to this new method it was a challenge. However, we are determined that over the next couple of weeks we will crack it! Literacy Our atmospheric writing has come to an end. At the beginning of the week we wrote our final couple of paragraphs before spending a lesson editing and then publishing our work. In relation to our reading, Mrs Wilson and Mrs Knott came to watch our reading lesson on Tuesday afternoon. They were completely blown away by our hard work! Mrs Wilson was so impressed with our ability to find evidence from a piece of text and how we use the evidence to explain how characters are feeling. Well done Team LG - cracking job! Maths
During our maths lessons this week we have focused on solving addition and subtraction word problems in context. We discussed the language used in worded problems and how to decide on the operation that would be needed to solve the question. We created a list of the key words that may come up in questions and decided on whether these would relate to addition questions or subtraction questions. Literacy Following our introduction to Atmospheric Writing, this week we watched a video stimulus from the Literacy Shed known as 'Dracula's Whitby'. The virtual tour video took us on a journey through the abbey courtyard and the abbey itself. After watching the video and planning for writing, we have started to create first person accounts of the approach to the abbey. We have specifically focused on building tension through the use of sound and giving the reader hints as to what we might/might not have seen. Maths
We have continued with the column subtraction method this week, including subtracting across zeros. We discussed how this relates to real life contexts, for example working out the change we would receive from a bill. Towards the end of the week we also started to look at two step problems and how we can work out what we are expected to do based on the language used within the question. Literacy During our lessons this week we have focused on two SPAG elements: expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbial phrases. We discussed their importance in our writing and in relation to the end of Year 5 expectations. Yesterday, we watched a video click about how Bram Stoker got his inspiration from Whitby to write chapters 6, 7 and 8 of his book 'Dracula'. Together, we then created a paragraph for a setting in Whitby, which included two examples of expanded noun phrases and two examples of fronted adverbial phrases. Maths
Throughout our lessons this week we have looked at using the column subtraction method to solve written calculations. We started working on calculations that had the same amount of digits before looking at calculations that have a differing number of digits and then finally, we looked at calculations including decimals. Towards the end of the week, we have also completed our weekly mental arithmetic paper. Literacy In our literacy lessons we have focused on recount writing. Recounts are a way of retelling an important event or describing an experience that you have had to others, such as a school trip or a funny story. When writing our own recounts about our trip to Whitby, we have worked on making sure the following are included:
Wednesday 4th October
All children are to arrive at school on Wednesday (5th October) morning for 8:30am. At this time, children and parents will be allowed into the hall with luggage. Can children then make their way to Team LG's classroom to be registered? Once we have registered, we will make our way down to the coach for a 9:00am set off. Parents are very welcome to stay and wave their children off.
Maths
Continuing with our unit on Place Value, this week we focused on counting forwards and backwards in powers of 10. We quickly recognised a pattern to this and we even recognised what happened when the answer bridged 10. Towards the end of the week we brought our learning to a close and completed our first 'Kahoot!' based on our maths lessons over the past four weeks. Literacy This week in Literacy, we created letters in response to Chloe's problems. This meant that we were writing a letter back to Chloe from the perspective of the agony aunt. We had to ensure that the advice we were giving was realistic and concise, to make sure that we were following the features of a short letter. Maths
Throughout this week we have continued working on our Place Value Unit and have focused on ordering numbers to at least 1,000,000. During our lessons we have used both concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to order numbers and finished the week by completing some problem solving questions. Literacy 'Mr Stink' has once again been the focus of our Literacy lessons this week. We began the week by discussing the purpose of an Agony Aunt and why people would write letters to a magazine asking for help. Using our knowledge of the story so far and the work we have been doing on characterisation, we identified 'Chloe's' problems and the reasons why she may need to write to an Agony Aunt. We have used this to start writing our own letters from the perspective of Chloe. On Monday and Tuesday, we kicked off our Arts Project with an exciting trip to the RSPB Old Moor. During our visits we took part in several workshops, which included pond dipping and bird watching. Further to these activities, we also explored the RSPB Old Moor, discovered and learnt about the biodiversity in our local area. We are now using this as a stimulus back in class to produce a piece of artwork.
