Maths
This week we have been working hard on learning our times tables and we have completed daily tables races, in school and at home. One member of our team now holds the quickest time of 2:45 (minutes). We have also been focusing on Place Value, particularly determining the value of digits in numbers and comparing two numbers to see which is greater. We used a mastery approach and have completed our first 'Show it, Draw it, Explain it, Prove it' grids. Literacy Throughout the week we have explored characterisation in 'Mr Stink' by David Walliams. We have concentrated on a new technique when describing characters which is known as Point, Evidence, Explanation (PEE). We wrote our first character description based on 'Mother' and towards the end of this week we have started to focus on 'Annabelle'. We are going to continue looking at characterisation next week.

Congratulation Team LG on pulling off not one but two OUTSTANDING performances this week. I am so proud of each and every one of you for showing such dedication and commitment to our end of year production. It has been wonderful listening to all the fantastic comments audience members have had to say. Well done and thank you for being superstars!
Assessment week:
A huge well done to all Team LG members for their perseverance during assessment week. Throughout the week we have completed a total of five test papers (Maths Paper 1, 2 and 3, SPAG and Reading). It has been amazing to see the progress that ALL the children have made since our last tests. I am so proud of their efforts and achievements! This week we have also continued to rehearse for our production - 'Lights, Camera, Action!'. It's great to see the final bits all coming together and falling into place. We are all excited to be performing our dress rehearsal to the school this afternoon. There is a buzz of excitement and a few nerves flying around this morning. Unfortunately, due to a sporting trip, our scheduled dress rehearsal has been changed to Friday. On Wednesday, the majority of the class are out on a sporting event and therefore it would be difficult to perform to the rest of the school with only half of our cast. Mrs Longden and I have made the decision that it would be better to reschedule and perform our dress rehearsal on Friday instead.
Can parents/carers ensure that ALL costumes are in school by Thursday morning at the latest. Thank you! Interfaith fortnight:
This week we have started to focus on our RE topic, Islam. Firstly, we looked at the founders of the faith and the main countries in which the faith is practised. We then discussed the prophets of the faith and the main beliefs of Islam. Following this we then took a look at the inside of a mosque and identified the key features including: Qiblah, Mihrab, Minbar, Wash Area, Minaret and Prayer Mats. We completed mosque diagrams, labelled the key features and gave a brief explanation about the significance of each feature. During our art lesson with Mrs Fitchett, we have started to design our own prayer mats and are going to continue with this next week. To raise the awareness of the importance of staying safe online, on Tuesday we had a visit from Jane MacDonald (South Yorkshire Police). Jane and her colleague, Diane, came to talk to Team LG about E-Safety.
The presentation was designed to enable us to look at online behaviours and the safe use of the internet/social media sites and phone apps. The presentation was carefully structured to enable us to understand how we should use the internet and social media, what we should/shouldn’t share and who we should/shouldn’t share it with. It also provided the opportunity for us to explore key questions such as ‘How should we use social media safely?’ and ‘How should we act online?’. The presentation explored many of the online sites that some us are currently using and sites that we may use in the future. It also explored concepts such as cyber bullying, trolling, online gaming and online crazes. Maths:
We have had extra support this week in Maths from Mrs Longden. We have split into two groups for our learning but both focussed on similar aspects of Maths. Miss Garratt's group have been looking at equivalent fractions and then converting these to decimals and percentages. Mrs Longden's group have also looked at fractions and then revised the written methods for addition and subtraction towards the end of the week. Both groups have done fantastically well and shown great resilience to learning. Literacy: Following our visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, we completed a shared writing activity in small groups. The challenge was to use descriptive techniques to describe one animal from the park, without mentioning the name of the animal. Our writing was then read to the other groups, who had to guess which animal was being described. The better the description, the easier it was to identify the chosen animal. Other news: This week we have started our production rehearsals (acting, dancing and singing) for our performance on Monday 3rd and Thursday 6th July. We are all very excited and already can't wait to perform to our parents/carers/friends. As part of our Science topic this term, I have arranged for a class trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park which is due to take place after the half term holiday. The scheduled date for this visit is Tuesday 6th June 2017. The majority of the day will be self-guided, giving the children a chance to visit a variety of animals and learn all about their natural habitats. The park itself offers the opportunity for the children to attend scheduled ranger talks, animal feeding times and chat with the park rangers to learn more about the wildlife. With nearly 400 animals and 70 different species of animal, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is a fantastic place to experience a fantastic walkthrough wildlife adventure. To make the most of the day and to ensure that the children can get the best experience whilst at the park I have booked for the children to attend an educational workshop led by the staff at the wildlife park. Linked to our topic on Habitats and Life Cycles, this session will focus on African savannahs, polar, desert and rainforest habitats and some of the animals that live there. This session involves a habitat game activity, animal bio – facts and live animals. On the day of the trip we will register as normal and set off to the park at 8:45am. We will travel by coach and arrive at Yorkshire Wildlife Park for 9:45am. Once we have arrived and made our way through the entrance we will explore the park and visit the animals in small groups supervised by a member of Park Street staff. At 12:00pm we will head for our educational talk which is scheduled for 40 minutes. Following this, we will stop to have our lunch (children will need to take a packed lunch with them) in one of the picnic surroundings. After eating we aim to explore the park further and be back on the coach to head home at 2:15pm. We will arrive back at school in time for the end of the school day at 3:15pm. The total cost for this trip is £12.50 per child. This has been subsidised by school funds to offset costs to you. The price for this trip includes your child’s entrance to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, the educational talk and the transport to and from the park. If you would like your child to participate in this fantastic day of learning, would you please complete the slip on the attached document below and return it to school as soon as possible. Kindest Regards, Miss Garratt
Team LG would like to say a huge GOOD LUCK to all the children in Team MK. We know how incredibly hard you have worked this year and we would like to send our very best wishes to you all this week. We'll keep our fingers crossed for you!
Maths:
This week in Maths we have continued to work on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and by mixed fractions. Following this we then worked on converting improper fraction to mixed numbers using our times tables knowledge and the bus stop division method. Literacy: Within Literacy we continued to look at prefixes and suffixes, alongside persuasive writing. We have started to write our persuasive letters to our chosen celebrities' 'agents', to convince them that their client should participate in 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Where?'. All members of Team LG have been particularly impressed with the quality of the children's writing and we even WOWED Mr Fidment! In other lessons: Team LG have been locating and researching various habitats including the Rainforest, the Sahara Desert and the Arctic. The children have also begun looking at animals and how they adapt to their habitats. During Art with Mrs Fitchett, Team LG have drawn their designs on their Greek vases in preparation for painting. |
