Today, we investigated which material is the best for creating sound. We made our own drums using plastic bowls and different materials (tin foil, paper, greaseproof paper and clingfilm) and then in small groups we took these outside to test the level of noise they created. Each group had varying results however, we were all in agreement that there were some variables we had no control over, such as the noise from other classrooms and the wind.

This week we had a look at the written method for multiplication, when multiplying by a two digit number. We have found this a challenge and it something we will need to revisit next week and potentially after the Christmas holidays. Literacy During our lessons, we finished our draft diary entries (from the perspective of a miner) in relation to the Lundhill Colliery Disaster in 1857. We then focussed on editing our writing to ensure the punctuation was accurate and that we had correct any spelling errors. We have started to publish our diary entries and will be continuing with this on Monday. Maths
During our lessons we have focused heavily on the times tables, learning tricks to work out multiples of numbers and applying our knowledge to reasoning questions. We have also been busy creating 'factor bugs' to ensure we were identifying all factor pairs of given numbers. We found this challenging to begin with to make sure we identified all factors. However, after a bit of practice and working on a strategy to make sure we had all factors we realised we could do it! Literacy This week we have analysed the features of a diary entry, paying particular attention to the use of dashes to indicate parenthesis, the use of the past tense and the use of ambitious language. Towards the end of the week, we have focussed on the past present tense and the past progressive tense. If you want to know more, ask one of us. We're much better than Miss Garratt at it! A huge well done to all Team LG for their effort and commitment during assessment week. I am very proud of each and everyone of you!

During our lessons this week we have consolidated our knowledge of column subtraction, focusing on questions that contain two five digit numbers, questions that contain a five digit number subtract a four digit number and questions based on decimals. As we had remembered all tips given to us before the holidays we were super speedy. So, we were able to quickly move on to subtracting across zeros. This is something we have found a little more challenging. However, we are persistent and we will master it! Literacy Throughout our lessons this week we have worked on identifying features of newspaper reports. We recognised that quite often sentences in newspapers contain additional information in brackets and we learnt that this is called parenthesis. We were given the task of identifying if brackets had been used correctly and then had to input brackets into sentences of our own. In addition to this, we have been conducting research about Lundhill mining disaster in preparation for writing our own news articles. Today, we were lucky to listen to stories from Mrs Greenhalgh who grew up within a coal mining family. She told us all sorts of information and opened our eyes to a world that is completely different from our own. As we come to the end of our first half term, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your fantastic attitude, not only to learning but our new school routines also. You have all taken it in your stride and have settled in really well. We have already made so much progress and I can't wait to see what next half term has to offer for us as a class and a school.
Well done Team LG! Have a super holiday and as always, stay safe. Maths
This week we have focussed on understanding and using negative numbers in context and learning the Roman numerals for numbers up to 1,000. I must say Team LG, I have been astounded with your effort and enthusiasm to learning in Maths this week - you have blown me away! Literacy We have started our new writing unit based on atmospheric writing. We watched a video called 'Dracula's Whitby', which took us on a computerised tour of the abbey. This is our hook and stimulus for writing and we can not wait! We have analysed the text features of atmospheric writing (simple and complex sentences, expanded noun phrases and imagery). On Wednesday and Thursday, we focused on identifying main and subordinate clauses, part of the build up to simple and complex sentences which we are looking at next week. Today, you will be receiving your first piece of homework on Seesaw. Please come and speak to me if you need any help in accessing this or if you prefer to have a printed copy. I am also happy to help if you need any support completing it - don't be afraid to ask.

This week we have worked on counting backwards and forwards in steps of 10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 100000. We have also looked at rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 100000. Although we found rounding a bit of a challenge to begin with we persevered with this skill, used the taught methods and succeeded after a second attempt. Literacy During our lessons this week, we spent time editing our piece of writing based on Convict's Tunnel. We focussed on ensuring we had accurately used the features of a ghost story. We also used our dictionary skills to check the accuracy of our spellings. Towards the end of the week we have published our writing, concentrating on our handwriting and presentation skills. Today, we conducted our first experiment in Science. We wrapped an egg shaker in different materials (tissue, hand paper towel, paper, fabric, tin foil and clingfilm) and recorded the sound of the egg shaker. We were testing which material was best in preventing the sound from being heard. We concluded that the worst material was the clingfilm and the best material was the paper due to the thickness of this.
