This week our story has been Superworm by Julia Donaldson. We worked as a team to create a womery.
First we learnt how worms move through the soil and how important it is to care for them because without worms keeping the soil healthy, we wouldn't have flowers, trees, plants or food. We dug for some soil and added a layer to the wormery, then we added a layer of sand. We then continued this until the wormery was full. Some of the Rainbows collected some leaves to add to the top so the worms had some food. Over a few days we observed the worms moving through the soil. Here we are preparing it. The best part was digging for worms and we found a GIGANTIC one! It was much longer than Miss Clementson's hand when it stretched itself out!

In maths this week we have been subitising and using Rekenreks to help us. These are counting frames that are similar to an abacus. There are two rows, and each row has ten beads, five white and five red.
There is a special way to use Rekenreks and we have been learning to use them this week. We have been subitising (knowing how many there are instead of counting individually.) We have been learning to move a set number of beads from right to left on the top row. We subitise and place our finger next to the correct bead and push them all across together. When we have completed our answer, we tip the beads back across so we can complete the next question. Here we are getting used to subitising and using Rekenreks! During welly walk this week we attempted a much less wet spring hunt!
This week we focused on recapping the vocabulary; cowslip, bluebell, blossom, bud and shoot. We found lots of examples and were excited to see the forget me not flowers still blooming. It was much greener than last week too after all the rain we have been having and there were far more shoots and leaves on the bushes and trees. It was very sad to see that the grounds people had been in and cut down all the flowers and grass with their strimmers. Here we are having so much fun finding signs of spring! Team CW were so excited to go on our trip to Wombwell Library! We were very lucky to have sunny weather after the past couple of weeks!
We talked about road safety and have been practising crossing the road safely on our way to welly walk each week. We know we have to stop, look, listen and think before we step into the road and when we are crossing. We wore hi-vis jackets so we could be seen by passing motorists and were very good at listening to adults on the way there and on the way back. Some of us had never visited a library before and were amazed at all the wonderful books that lined every wall! The lady began by telling us how we can sign up to get a library card and can take a book home to read, then return it and swap it for another one. She read us a lovely story called "The Weed" by Quentin Blake and then we were able to explore! We took part in some activities about plants to support our growing and planting topic, and were able to look at some stories and books about plants. Miss Clementson read us a couple of stories before it was time to come back to school. It was lovely to hear that some Rainbows already visit the library, and also how many would like to visit again with their parents so they can borrow a book! Rainbows love looking at books and reading and we can't wait to hear which books you have borrowed! To help us learn about lifecycles Mrs Watson brought in some frogspawn for us to observe!
We have been carefully watching for any changes over the past few days and have been delighted that some of the frogspawn has hatched! We have been talking about the lifecycle of frogs and know that a frog lays frogspawn, tadpoles hatch from the eggs, turn into froglets by growing little legs and then turn into frogs. Then the cycle starts again! Some of us have asked to name the tadpoles and wrote a list of what we would like to call them. Here we are carefully observing them! This week on Welly Walk we went on a spring hunt! We found so many signs of spring but unfortunately it was typical spring weather and we got a bit wet! We still had so much fun though!
We learnt lots of new vocabulary and spotted Forget-Me-Nots, Bluebells, blossom and Cowslips. We also found some toadstools and spoke about how wet the weather had been. We identified some buds and shoots and brought some branches back up to the classroom to observe any changes over the next few days. Here we are slightly soggy but working really hard! To kick off our Watch it Grow topic we have been learning about life cycles. We have been introduced to lots of new vocabulary this week including; hatch, cocoon, stages, frogspawn, froglet and tadpole. We have learnt about the lifecycle of chickens, butterflies and frogs and know that lifecycle means the series of stages a living thing goes through throughout its life.
We have taken part in many different activities this week including developing our fine motor skills to make tiny chain link caterpillars sitting on a leaf, making large chain link caterpillars using two colours so we can see which two numbers make either five or ten and designing healthy lunchboxes for the Very Hungry Caterpillar! We also mixed colours to paint some "Bleeding Hearts" flowers as we have been learning about Spring on Welly Walk. Here we are having fun! Here is just one of our AMAZING readers this week! We are so proud of you and your speedy reading!
What a star! Well done! This week we have been learning about Eid. We know that it means "festival" in Arabic and is the breaking of the fast (not eating and drinking during daylight hours.) It is the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.
We made some Eid cards this week and wrote our names inside. This week we have been learning about the Hungry Caterpillar. We had a shop on our interactive whiteboard filled with lots of different types of food the hungry caterpillar might like to buy to help fatten him up ready to construct his cocoon.
Unfortunately the shelf labels had fallen off and we needed the hungry caterpillar to know what food he was buying. We practised segmenting and blending sounds in words ("Fred Talking") to read them. We even practised reading words with "special friends" graphemes and longer words by breaking them down into shorter words. The next day the labels had disappeared! We put our thinking caps on and segmented each sound in the word and wrote them in the correct order. Some of us wrote "special friends" graphemes too. Here we are working hard to be readers and writers! |
