To help us learn about lifecycles Mrs Watson brought in some frogspawn for us to observe!
We have been carefully watching for any changes over the past few days and have been delighted that some of the frogspawn has hatched! We have been talking about the lifecycle of frogs and know that a frog lays frogspawn, tadpoles hatch from the eggs, turn into froglets by growing little legs and then turn into frogs. Then the cycle starts again! Some of us have asked to name the tadpoles and wrote a list of what we would like to call them. Here we are carefully observing them!

This week on Welly Walk we went on a spring hunt! We found so many signs of spring but unfortunately it was typical spring weather and we got a bit wet! We still had so much fun though!
We learnt lots of new vocabulary and spotted Forget-Me-Nots, Bluebells, blossom and Cowslips. We also found some toadstools and spoke about how wet the weather had been. We identified some buds and shoots and brought some branches back up to the classroom to observe any changes over the next few days. Here we are slightly soggy but working really hard! To kick off our Watch it Grow topic we have been learning about life cycles. We have been introduced to lots of new vocabulary this week including; hatch, cocoon, stages, frogspawn, froglet and tadpole. We have learnt about the lifecycle of chickens, butterflies and frogs and know that lifecycle means the series of stages a living thing goes through throughout its life.
We have taken part in many different activities this week including developing our fine motor skills to make tiny chain link caterpillars sitting on a leaf, making large chain link caterpillars using two colours so we can see which two numbers make either five or ten and designing healthy lunchboxes for the Very Hungry Caterpillar! We also mixed colours to paint some "Bleeding Hearts" flowers as we have been learning about Spring on Welly Walk. Here we are having fun! Here is just one of our AMAZING readers this week! We are so proud of you and your speedy reading!
What a star! Well done! This week we have been learning about Eid. We know that it means "festival" in Arabic and is the breaking of the fast (not eating and drinking during daylight hours.) It is the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.
We made some Eid cards this week and wrote our names inside. This week we have been learning about the Hungry Caterpillar. We had a shop on our interactive whiteboard filled with lots of different types of food the hungry caterpillar might like to buy to help fatten him up ready to construct his cocoon.
Unfortunately the shelf labels had fallen off and we needed the hungry caterpillar to know what food he was buying. We practised segmenting and blending sounds in words ("Fred Talking") to read them. We even practised reading words with "special friends" graphemes and longer words by breaking them down into shorter words. The next day the labels had disappeared! We put our thinking caps on and segmented each sound in the word and wrote them in the correct order. Some of us wrote "special friends" graphemes too. Here we are working hard to be readers and writers! We have been learning about number tracks in maths and have been using them to play some games!
We know that numbers on a number track have to start with the smallest and you add one number to reach the largest number. We played several games this week to help us learn about this and used toys to help us. One of the games involved a dice with dots, although it only had one or two dots on each side. We subitised (rather than counted the dots) to see how many we needed to count on our number track until the toy reached the end. After each roll of the die we counted on the correct number and remembered to say the numeral we landed on, rather than counting the "jumps." Sometimes Miss Clementson forgot how to do this and missed out some numbers so we had to explain why she couldn't do that. We even wanted to play the game again later independently during provision time! This half term has certainly been a busy one despite it being so short. The Rainbows have taken time to review this half terms learning by looking at their learning journey display.
They have recapped the topics and activities and recalled some of the key vocabulary they have learnt across the topics. Here you can see some of their learning over the past few weeks. Next half term our topic is about growing and planting. This week one of our Rainbows achieved their 150 starbooks reading award! They get to spend their reward time at our "Biscuits, books and brew" event after the holidays!
Well done, what an achievement! The Rainbows have been so busy this week with all of our Easter activities! They have taken part in activities to support their physical development, understanding the world, creative development, PSE development, reading, writing, counting and matching numbers and their communication skills!
Activities have included; Egg rolling, Following instructions to make chocolate Easter nests, Making Easter cards, Painting daffodils in our still life area, Creating an Easter egg hunt for their friends, Looking at books about the story of Easter, Finding the Easter pictures hidden in the classroom for our Easter hunt, Dot to dots and colour by numbers, Colouring Easter pictures and more tricky mindfulness colouring pages. They also went on an Easter Egg Hunt in our outdoor area! What a VERY busy week with so much fun! |
