This week in maths we have been learning which two numbers make 10 together.
We have been looking at 10 sausages in a pan to help us. Some of the sausages were burnt so we subitised how many, subitised how many were not burnt and said which two numbers make ten! We used the stem sentences "6 needs 4 to make 10" (for example) and "10 is made of 6 and 4." We looked at a double dice pattern to help us identify two numbers that make 10 altogether. Our partner placed some counters on the double dice pattern and asked "how many do I need to make 10?" When we had identified the answer we swapped over. Here we are in action with our partner.

When we arrived at school on Friday we were amazed to see some footprints leading from outside, through the cloakroom and classroom, down the corridor and into Team EO! We followed the footprints and it led to a table with our Easter baskets on and they had chocolate eggs inside! There was a note from the Easter Bunny thanking us for all of our hard work this term!
We were so surprised but very grateful! Rainbows love Feel Good Friday and keeping fit! As the weather was a bit warmer today we ventured onto the school field for the first time.
We began by stretching our muscles so we were ready for exercise. We listened carefully to the instructions and learnt the word "lap." We ran once around the field to complete one lap, making sure we didn't cut the corners! We talked about slowing down if we were finding it tricky and walking if we needed to. We did so well considering it is quite a distance and it was our first time! We put our hand on our chest when we finished and could feel our heart beating faster. We were out of breath and some of us had red faces as our bodies were working hard. Next time we will try and run two laps around the field if we feel confident enough! Rainbows have been exploring an object from the past. We began by guessing what the object could be. There were some really good examples including a coffee pot, kettle, lamp and a teapot. There were some really interesting comments from the children including "This is old" and "it's old because it is dirty." We learnt the word tarnished and discussed what material the teapot is made from. The Rainbows passed it around the circle and said that it felt warm so we discussed that metal can heat up when touched by people as their body heat does this.
We discussed how the teapot looks different to some teapots today and named the legs, feet, handle, lid and spout. We also discussed how before teabags were introduced, loose tea was used and it used to take longer to boil water without an electric kettle. Here we are exploring the teapot! We have been working really hard in phonics over the past few weeks to learn new sounds and write words and sentences.
One of our activities this week was to spot Easter items in the picture and "Fred Talk" each sound in the word and write it. The Rainbows worked so hard to hear the sounds and write them following our handwriting phrases. Here is some of our AMAZING writing! A couple of weeks ago one of the Rainbows joined Miss Clementson on a litter pick in the EYFS area with the KS1 Eco Reps.
They loved it so much they asked to bring their litter picker from home and continue to clean our EYFS area. They spent such a long time doing this and made a huge difference for our Early Years classes. Well done for caring for our school environment! Rainbows love phonics, reading and writing and have been so busy in provision this week!
Rainbows enjoy choosing books from our reading area and add reading with their friends. It is lovely to hear them use story language and retell their favourite stories! We read Barry the Fish with Fingers this week (Miss Clementson's favourite story!) Some of us ordered the words in sentences by segmenting and blending the sounds. Rainbows have also been fishing for sounds! They had to use the rods to pick up the sounds then say the pure sound and match it to a sound on their mat. Some of the children had to fish for "special friends" digraphs and say the pure sound. Here we are in action! We have been developing our vocabulary by learning the names of a variety of different sea creatures. We also watched Andy's Wild Adventures to help us learn some facts about them and we found this very interesting!
We made some underwater scenes in the creative area by cutting out sea creatures and creating a porthole scene. We created underwater worlds in the dough and small world areas and used story language to make up our own stories about the creatures. Some of us made a 3d underwater box scene in the creative area by cutting and sticking and attaching materials in different ways. We even painted them and mixed the colours we needed. We could talk about how we made them and what we did, and if we made them again what we would do differently the next time. Here we are getting busy this week! This week we have been looking at different ways to make a number. We used sea shells to help us! We counted out a number of sea shells and found the numicon piece and numeral that matched.
We have been playing skittles too! We counted how many we knocked down with the ball and how many we needed to knock down until they were all down. We chose to this independently during provision time. One of our provision activities has been a subitising and counting game this week. The die had different colours on and they had to move one more space each time they rolled their colour. The Rainbows were really good at telling adults how many more they had to roll to get to the end of the track. Some of the Rainbows were really keen to make their own dice game too! Here they are with their games! As we have been learning about Under the Sea we have been experimenting with floating and sinking.
We identified and named different objects and tested them to see if they would sink or float. We then sorted them into two groups and talked about why we think they would float or sink. We talked about the word "absorbent" and the surface area of the object. One Rainbow loves to learn about the Titanic and decided to try and make it out of foil. He did not succeed the first few times but persevered and never gave up. He we are experimenting! |
